Over the years, Maureen had always given Zoe money without her knowledge.
But Zoe never spent a dime. She had little use for it and had stashed it all away.
Tears streamed down Maureen’s face as she listened to Zoe’s concerned nagging.
“Zoe, could you come pick me up just like you used to when I was little?”
Zoe fell silent, puzzled.
Maureen continued, “I want you to take me back to our home on the 15th.”
15th? Zoe was even more confused.
But she just nodded and said, “Alright. I’ll come and take you home on the 15th.”
Lately, Maureen had been receiving messages from the hospital about her follow–up, but she ignored them.
Since she had made up her mind to leave for good, there was no point wasting money on treatment.
There was a little over 30 thousand dollars left in her savings. She decided to leave it all behind for Zoe after she was
gone.
The rain in Karaville seemed endless.
Gareth came to visit Maureen a lot.
Most of the time, she’d sit on the balcony, staring into the distance, lost in a trance.
He could tell her condition had worsened–his rapid knocks went unanswered more and more often.
At the Sutton Group CEO’s office.
Geoffrey checked his phone out of habit after work. His eyes dimmed a little when, once again, he saw no messages from Maureen.
Wayne knocked on the door and entered.
“Mr. Sutton, I’ve found out. The man’s name is Gareth Burke, and he seems to be Ms. Ramirez’s childhood sweet- heart.”
Whether in Geoffrey’s perception or in all media reports, he had always been Maureen’s childhood sweetheart,
Wayne told him Maureen had met Gareth while she lived in the countryside.
In other words, Gareth knew Maureen longer than he did.

Geoffrey said without hesitation, “Tell him I have something to do today.”
Wayne was a bit stunned.

Geoffrey took the CEO’s elevator to the underground parking lot and then drove to the motel.
But the staff there told him she had moved away for a few days already.
All of a sudden, a wave of irritation surged through him. He pulled out his phone and scrolled through his contacts list time and again.
As he finally decided to dial Maureen’s number, Andrea called him.
“What’s up?”
“Geoff, Noelle told me Maureen’s gonna get married,” she said.
Geoffrey’s heart sank.
After the interview, Andrea went to Noelle.
Only then did she know Noelle and Adrian were planning on marrying Maureen to an old man in exchange for 50 million dollars.
Sensing Geoffrey’s silence, Andrea continued in an exaggerated tone, “Noelle mentioned Maureen is demanding 50 million dollars.
“Could you believe how greedy Maureen is?
“And since the cooling–off period isn’t over, Maureen and the old man are gonna hold a wedding first.”
Unbeknownst to Maureen, Noelle and Adrian were planning her wedding. They didn’t take her words seriously at all.
Then one day, Noelle texted her, “Mr. Carter has picked a date. It happens to be the 15th.”
“Only four days left. Get ready to marry him. This time, make sure you win over his heart. Get it?”
Complex emotions stirred in Maureen’s heart as she looked at the messages.
The 15th was the day Zoe was coming for her.
It was also the day she and Geoffrey had agreed to finalize their divorce.
