Stella Rivers stared at the screen, completely confused. She headed upstairs to his study for answers.
The door was cracked open. Just as she was about to enter, she heard her boyfriend Ryan Mitchell talking with his assistant.[]
“Mr. Mitchell, you’re seriously going to marry Stella in your brother’s place? But you don’t even love her!”
Ryan’s voice sounded hollow:[]
“Jake was crazy about her. Even his dying words were begging me to take care of her, to make her happy. I can’t just let her marry some stranger.”
Stella’s mind went blank with a loud buzzing sound, her entire body freezing like she’d been struck by lightning.
“What about Claire Bennett? If you marry Stella, what happens to Claire?”
Ryan’s face twisted with pain, and after a long pause, he sighed:[]
“Claire is the only woman I’ll ever love. Except for the wedding, everything I have belongs to her.“]
The assistant asked a few more questions, but Stella couldn’t hear them anymore,

The study door suddenly swung open.[]

Studying her calm face, Ryan asked carefully:]
“Babe, you didn’t hear what we were talking about, did you?“[]
Her heart clenched painfully, but Stella managed a smile:
“Nope, I just got to the door when you opened it. Is there something I’m not supposed to hear?“]
Ryan let out a soft laugh and gently stroked her hair
“Your birthday’s coming up, isn’t it? I’ve got a surprise planned for you. Won’t be much of a surprise if you find out early, right?“]
He pulled Stella into his arms and spent a while gently reassuring her.[]
Then he glanced at his phone again, his expression shifting slightly.
Ryan kissed her forehead softly: “Babe, something urgent came up at work. I won’t be staying over tonight. Sleep well.“]
And just like that, he vanished into the night with his assistant.]
Stella walked into the study and immediately spotted the photo glaring at her from the computer screen.[]

Ryan’s messages were still open, and a text from Claire had just come in.[]

Her chest felt like it was being ripped apart. Stella slammed the laptop shut, her thoughts spiraling back to the past.[]
