Felicity kept bragging about her so–called designer.
“I heard she’s really young, but incredibly talented–she’s already a big deal in the French design world.
“It’s not easy for a small brand like ours to get her attention, but I’m confident!”
As she spoke, she leaned affectionately toward Carlos. “Right, Carlos?”
Carlos gave a distracted “yeah,” his gaze still locked on me, eyes dark with something like resentment, refusing to say another word.
The others took this as their cue to trample all over me, all to prop up Felicity even higher.
I calmly lifted my glass and took a slow sip of water, my expression steady and composed.
Just then, there was a soft knock at the private room’s door.
A young woman in a business suit poked her head in, clutching a thick stack of files, her face a mix of anxiety and respect.
“Ms. Claridge, sorry to interrupt.
“I brought the urgent files you requested about the Lumina project, and also, about the designer…”
Felicity perked up instantly, “What about her? Did she respond? Did she agree to meet with us and talk details?”

Her voice was brimming with anticipation.
Rachel, the assistant, hugged the files and nodded. “I met with the designer today, but she already had plans tonight, so we scheduled a meeting for tomorrow.”

As soon as Rachel confirmed she’d actually met the mysterious designer and secured a meeting for tomorrow, Felicity’s face lit up with a
victorious grin.
“That’s fantastic!”
She turned to Carlos, her eyes sparkling with pride.
“See, Carlos? I told you I could make it happen. Tomorrow, I’m sealing the deal!”
The classmates around us immediately erupted in a chorus of flattery.
“Ms. Claridge, you really are something else!”
“Amazing! We’ll all be counting on you in the future, Ms. Claridge!”
“Mr. Vellin is so lucky to have someone as capable as you by his side!”
Basking in the wave of compliments, Felicity’s vanity was clearly
satisfied.
Her gaze drifted lazily over to where I sat quietly in the corner.
“Oh, right, Taylor, does your company have any basic openings lately? Like janitorial work or something?”
She paused, flicking her eyes pointedly in my direction.
“Ivory used to help Alpha out so much. I heard she doesn’t have a real job now. Since we’re old classmates, I thought I’d help her find something

steady–it’s the least I can do.”
The room fell silent for a moment, then burst into even louder laughter and jeers.

“Oh, Ms. Claridge, you really shouldn’t! It’s good to be kind, but people like her and her family–are just trouble!”
“Exactly! You guys don’t know–when she ran off without a word, her parents made a huge scene at school! They rolled around on the ground, sobbing and screaming outside the principal’s office, swearing the school had kidnapped their daughter! Even the local news showed up! It was so humiliating!”
“Yeah, her whole family’s like that just impossible! Ms. Claridge, your design company is just getting started, right? What if her parents show up at your office, causing trouble? What would you do then?”
Felicity put on a face of exaggerated concern.
“Oh, is that so? Well, I’m really sorry, Ivory. You see, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but my design company is still new and fragile. I just can’t risk getting mixed up with you and your family’s drama.”
She finished by scooting even closer to Carlos, as if being near me might bring her bad luck.
Carlos just watched me, his lips twitching as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he just scowled and kept quiet.
Everyone’s eyes were on me–watching for my reaction, their gazes full of smug superiority and contempt.
I never understood why she was so obsessed with offering me a job.
But I stayed calm, repeating what I’d said before.

Felicity sighed, “You really should quit that gig. Sure, you’re young and pretty, but… jobs like that, you’ll just get sick in the long run.”
The room broke out in another round of mocking laughter.
Even Rachel laughed, but when she looked at me, her professional smile suddenly froze.
