The moment Kendall heard those words, she felt something inside her shatter.[]

A sharp, piercing pain struck her chest, making it hard to breathe without feeling that sting.

Before long, Tiffany was wheeled into the operating room.[]

Elijah slowly closed his eyes, his hands hanging limply by his sides.[]

The heart monitor let out a wretched beep.

A few of the guys nearby were terrified, shaking Kendall and urging her to do something.

All she could do was pull herself together and call a few friends from her circle in Sunterland.[]

She remembered that one of them had an uncle who was the head of a hospital in Northland–experienced but long retired.]

As soon as her friend heard the situation, she urged Kendall to transfer the patient there. She would contact her uncle to take over the

surgery.

The doctors and nurses sprang into action, loading Elijah back onto the ambulance, doing their best to stabilize him during the transfer.

Ten minutes later, Elijah was back in the operating room.[]

Kendall stood outside the OR all night.]

Her mind was blank as she bit her lower lip until it bled.]

As dawn broke, the lights in the operating room finally went out.]

“The surgery was a success.“[]

Hearing the head surgeon’s words, Kendall felt all her strength drain away.]

With a heavy sigh, her legs buckled, and she fainted.

The next day around noon, Kendall woke up to see a nurse removing her IV.

“Your boyfriend’s surgery went well. He’s out of the ICU, so don’t worry.”

Kendall pressed down on the IV, clarified which roomi

was in, and dragged her weak body out of bed.[]

As soon as she reached the door, she heard a heated argument inside.[]

“Elijah, we told you Tiffany is fine. Why do you insist on transferring to her hospital? You just got past the danger zone–what if something happens to you?“[]

“Right? Do you have any idea how many calls Kendall made just to save your life? Just let it be. Tiffany isn’t as hurt as you are. You can go see her later.“]

A group of people was trying to reason with him, but Elijah wasn’t listening.]

“No way. I shielded Tiffany during the accident, but she’s still badly hurt. I can’t relax until I see her with my own eyes.“[]

Kendall listened quietly and pushed the door open.[]

Everyone in the room turned to look at her.[]

Elijah froze for a second, a mix of emotions washing over his face.[]

Kendall didn’t give him a chance to speak first. She spoke up, “I know I’m not your family and don’t have the power to decide what you do, but if you really want to transfer hospitals, I’ll call Haley. She should be able to come this afternoon. You can wait a few hours.”

Her tone was calm, but to Elijah, it felt like a punch to the gut.]

He pushed everyone out of the room and grabbed her hand, desperately trying to explain.[]

“If something had happened to Tiffany in my car, I would never forgive myself, so that’s why I insisted on saving her first. In my heart, you are just as important to me as Kendall and my parents. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.“[]

Kendall couldn’t decipher whether he was being sincere or not.[]

She wanted to ask him, if she meant as much to him as his family, then what about Tiffany? What role did Tiffany play in his life?]

But she decided to approach it differently.]]

“Elijah, do you want to live? Or do you think life is important?“]

Elijah was taken aback by her sudden question, hesitating before nodding.]

“Of course.“]

So it turned out Tiffany was more important than Elijah’s own life.[]

Kendall got the answer she had been looking for.

She withdrew her hand, swallowed hard, and forced out a strained smile.

“Okay, if you want to transfer, then go ahead. But I’m still going to call Haley. I don’t want her to be upset if something happened to

you.”

With that, she turned and left the room.[]

Just before the door closed, she heard Elijah’s anxious voice.

“I won’t transfer, Kendall. Please don’t tell my sister. I don’t want her to know.“[]

“What is he so worried about Haley finding out? That he is injured? Or that they are secretly dating?” Kendall didn’t know, and she didn’t care anymore.

She decided not to call Haley. She was abroad on vacation, and Kendall didn’t want to burden her with trivial matters.

She hired two caretakers to help with Elijah’s needs.]] 

Occasionally, when the caretakers came to deliver meals, they would mention him.[]
