Charlotte hadn’t expected him to suddenly appear. Before she could react, the nurse spoke first.[]
“Are you the patient’s husband? Yesterday when she was brought in, we fought all night to save her. We unlocked her phone and called you countless times, but you never answered! It’s fortunate nothing serious happened to her, otherwise you might not have even seen her one last time. Your wife is severely injured–you should care more about her, or those points will all be gone.“]
The nurse muttered while handing over the medical report.[]
Looking at the injury assessment, Blake’s eyes darkened, and for once, he offered a lengthy explanation.[]
“Yesterday when the chandelier fell, many customers were injured. The crowd was furious, and I was afraid they might do something harmful to Madeline, so I took her away first. Everything happened so suddenly–I didn’t know you were hurt, which is why I couldn’t bring you to the hospital. I’m sorry.“[]
Charlotte listened quietly, then calmly asked, “Then why do you have time to visit me now?”
Before coming, Blake had prepared himself for her to be upset or angry.
But seeing her unexpected reaction, he was momentarily taken aback.[]
“Madeline was traumatized yesterday, so I brought her to see a psychologist. I saw your name at the front desk, so I came to check on you.”
Charlotte lowered her head, a flash of self–mockery in her eyes.]
“So it was just a coincidence.“[]
Blake heard the dejection in her voice and was about to say something when his phone vibrated several times.]
Opening it to see Madeline asking where he was, he immediately forgot everything else.[]
“It was a coincidence, but I’m relieved to see you’re okay. Rest well. I’ll come back to check on you later.“[]
With that, Blake left without looking back.[]
Charlotte could guess he was going to find Madeline. Despite her weakened state, she forced herself to follow him and saw him enter the psychology consultation room.[]
Through the window, she watched as Madeline reached out to him with teary eyes, and he naturally took her hand, their fingers intertwining.
The doctor asked many questions about Madeline–her past experiences, medical history–and Blake knew everything, answering fluently.]
During the counseling session, Madeline broke down emotionally several times, and Blake comforted her with patience and tenderness Charlotte had never witnessed before.[]
When the session ended, the doctor gave a clear diagnosis.[]
“The patient suffered significant trauna in her previous relationship and hasn’t been able to move past it, resulting in severe insecurity. Even minor frights can trigger her. She needs the companionship of close family and friends to overcome this shadow.“]
Chapter 5
Hearing this, Blake’s expression instantly darkened.]
After coaxing Madeline to sleep, he called his assistant, his voice cold as frost.
“Find out exactly what Madeline went through in her previous marriage. Report everything to me. Also, prepare a private jet–I’m taking her away for a change of scenery.“[]
Witnessing all this, endless bitterness and sorrow spread through Charlotte’s body.
She finally understood that Blake wasn’t incapable of expressing love–the person he loved had simply never been her.[]
That’s why when she was injured, he wouldn’t show excessive concern; when she suffered in their marriage, he chose to ignore it; when she was at her most vulnerable, he wouldn’t stay by her side.[]
Charlotte raised her head, not letting her tears fall, silently telling herself:
This marriage, which had always been one–sided on her part, was about to reach its end.[]
She would give Blake his freedom.[]
And she would finally free herself.[]
