Midnight Call Ch 55
Charlotte literally thought she was gonna die when her husband Aiden found that paper – her secret Marriage Scoreboard.[]
“Minus five: ditched my birthday to fly to Australia for his ex.“[]
“Minus ten: left me stranded on some highway to grab her from the airport.“]
“Minus ten: lost our wedding ring while making her freaking soup…“[]

Each line was another knife twist, at the very bottom, she’d scribbled in tiny letters:[]
“Hit minus 100 points = we’re done.“]
that Aid
But what she didn’t expect that Aiden directly toss it to her without spare it a glance.
“This office is for my important stuff only, so keep your things out of here.“[]
However, looking around, Charlotte only found that his shelves were perfectly arranged with every book his ex had ever given him back in school. And the glass cabinet? Locked up tight with all his ex’s old love letters. Even on his desk was he and his ex’s high school graduation picture in a fancy frame.]
So that’s what he meant by his “important stuff.” Treasures he meticulously preserved and looked at countless times each day.[]
While her things? He wouldn’t even spare them a glance.[]
That’s why he had no idea she would soon be walking out of his life.]
Charlotte clutched the scoreboard and nodded. Just as she turned to leave, Blake’s phone rang–one of his friends calling.
“Blake! There’s a fire at Chandler! Isn’t that where Madeline lives?“[]
His expression transformed instantly. He snatched his car keys and bolted out the door.
Charlotte stared after him for a few seconds before hailing a cab to follow.
On the way, he ran through more than a dozen red lights, driving so recklessly the taxi nearly lost him.[]
When they arrived at the scene, Charlotte was stunned by the towering flames and black smoke.]
Learning that Madeline hadn’t been rescued yet, Blake desperately tried to rush into the burning building.[]
Firefighters and his friends held him back. “Sir, the fire is too intense! Going in there would be suicide!“[]
“Blake, think about what you’re doing! Being a pilot is your life’s dream–if you get injured, your career is over!”
Burt Blake wouldn’t listen. He shoved them aside and plunged into the inferno with one parting line:]
“I don’t care if my career is finished. As long as Madeline’s safe, I can live without being a pilot.“]
Watching his silhouette disappear into the thick smoke, his friends stood there dumbfounded, blaming each other.
“I told you not to call him! He always loses his mind whenever Madeline’s in danger!“]

“If we hadn’t called him and something happened to her, he’d tear the city apart! Remember when that teacher harassed Madeline in high school? Blake beat the crap out of him in his own office! And that time Madeline went missing for ten hours? He had his security team searching the entire city…“[]
Listening to their conversation, Charlotte froze.[]
The man she knew–always calm, always controlled.[]
Yet here was the truth.]
For someone else, he became a different person entirely.[]
For someone else, he would burn down the world.
The realization sent waves of pain through her heart.[]
His friends noticed her standing there and awkwardly tried to backpedal.[]
“Charlotte! You… you came with Blake? He’s just rescuing an old classmate, don’t get the wrong idea!“]]
“Yeah, exactly! He and Madeline have known each other since they were kids–they’re practically siblings! That’s why he’s so worried.“[
Charlotte knew they were trying to cover for him. She forced a smile, tasting blood–she’d bitten her lip without realizing it.]
Thirty minutes later, Blake emerged carrying an unconscious Madeline. Everyone rushed forward.
His face was covered in soot, his white shirt partially burned away, yet he had protected Madeline perfectly.
As paramedics took Madeline, Blake finally collapsed.
The ambulance raced them to the hospital. Charlotte sat on a bench, staring at her trembling hands, remembering the first time she’d met Blake.
Back then, she was a sophomore when her father, a professor at the Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University, introduced her to his star student. Blake stood at the podium in his crisp uniform, explaining flight principles with such passion that even the sunlight seemed drawn to him.]
It was love at first sight for her. She followed him everywhere.[]
Though many girls pursued him, he kept everyone at arm’s length, rejecting all advances.
Then, just before graduation, Charlotte’s father fell gravely ill. On his deathbed, he asked Blake to take care of his only daughter.]
Blake promised he would.[]
After the funeral, he proposed to her directly.]
“Are you doing this because of my father?” she asked. “You don’t have to…“]
He looked at her and said, “No. I want to marry

you.“[]
Until one night when she went to pick up a drunk Blake and overheard his friends talking.]
Chapter 1
“Charlotte’s so naive, man. Blake’s kept her in the dark all these years. She thinks he cares about her and gives him everything, but he only married her because his first love got hitched to someone else. He was heartbroken and needed a distraction.“[]
In that moment, Charlotte’s world shattered.[]
All those years he’d pushed everyone away wasn’t because he was naturally cold–it was because his heart already belonged to his ex.]
He was like a stubborn gravedigger, guarding a long–dead relationship.
His pride wouldn’t let him fight for her, his dignity wouldn’t let him admit he missed her.]]
So he just stood there, waiting for her to come back.[]
Instead, he got the news of her wedding.
Madeline Grant–the name carved into his heart, along with all the years of his restraint and waiting–became a thorn in Charlotte’s
chest.
But she loved Blake too much to let go.
So she secretly created the scoreboard. When it reached negative 100, she would leave him.]
Over the years, the points dropped steadily.
Sometimes it was her birthday, but he’d fly off to see Madeline because of a social media post.
Sometimes it was their anniversary, but he’d spend all night talking with Madeline.[]
And after Madeline’s divorce and return to the country…]
The points began dropping more rapidly.
And Charlotte’s heart grew colder by the day.[]
After the surgery, the doctor came out to update them on Blake’s condition.
ders,
“The patient has multiple burns on his arms, shoulders, neck, and back from the rescue. There will definitely be scarring. The woman he saved is fine, though–just unconscious from shock. No need to worry about her.“[]
His friends exchanged uncomfortable glances, scratching their heads nervously as they tried to smooth things over.
“As long as he’s okay! Charlotte, don’t worry–even if he can’t fly anymore, it’s not the end of the world. His family owns that huge business in Chicago and they’ve been waiting for him to take over anyway. Let’s go check on him.“[
Charlotte lowered her eyes, hiding the bitterness welling up inside.[]
“I have something to take care of. You go ahead without me.“]
With that, she turned away in silence, returning home where she picked up the scoreboard with trembling hands.[]
After deducting another five points, she looked at the remaining score and gave a sad smile.
Just twenty more points to go, and her marriage to Blake would be over for good.]
