Midnight Call Ch 56

Charlotte turned and headed to a law firm.]]

After having a lawyer draft divorce papers, she picked up some porridge and returned to the hospital.

Just as she reached Blake’s room, she saw Madeline frantically trying to take care of him.

Madeline had ladled a bowl of soup for Blake, but accidentally spilled it on him. While apologizing and trying to help clean him up, she unintentionally tore open one of his wounds. When she tried to treat the injury, she grabbed the wrong medication…]

Seeing Blake wince in pain, Madeline’s eyes immediately welled with tears.

“Blake, I’m so sorry. I know you rushed into that fire for me and got seriously hurt. I want to take care of you, but I’m doing everything wrong. I’m sorry.“]]

A flicker of tenderness passed through Blake’s usually cold eyes. “You’ve been pampered your whole life and never had to struggle. It’s perfectly normal that you don’t know how to care for someone. I just have some minor injuries–I’ll be fine in a few days. Don’t worry or feel guilty.“]

Hearing this only made Madeline cry harder.[]

“You’re lying to me again. What do you mean ‘minor injuries‘? The doctor told me everything. Your burns are severe, and you’ll never be able to work as a pilot again. Right?“]

At the sight of her tears, Blake’s expression grew complicated.[]

He wanted to hold and comfort her, but as he reached out, he realized the gesture wasn’t appropriate for their current relationship.

So instead, he pulled out some tissues and handed them to her. “Actually, I already drafted my resignation letter. I was planning to leave this month anyway, so whether I can continue as a pilot doesn’t matter to me at all. None of this is on you. Just… stop crying,

okay?”

Madeline froze, staring at him through tear–filled eyes.[]

“Resign? Why? Didn’t you say being a pilot was your dream?“]

Blake was silent for a moment. When he finally spoke, his voice had something weird.[]

“Being a pilot was never my dream. I became one because when you were eight, you said a pilot looked handsome. You said you wanted to marry a pilot someday who would personally fly you around the world. I thought you’d remember that.“[]

“Blake!”

Madeline never imagined this was the reason. Unable to hold back, she threw herself into his arms.[]

Blake was startled for a moment. His hands, which had hesitated and withdrawn earlier, finally embraced her.[]

Witnessing this scene, Charlotte felt as if someone had plunged a knife into her heart, twisting it until the pain was unbearable–a raw, bleeding agony that left her gasping for breath.[]

She clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white, her lower lip bitten until it bled.]

Swallowing down all those painful emotions, she left the items at the door and walked away.[]

Chapter 2

Just as she reached the ground floor, she ran into several of Blake’s flight crew colleagues.[]

They had come to visit him, and after exchanging brief pleasantries, they asked about his condition.[]

Charlotte briefly explained the situation and gave them his room number.]]

They were about to head upstairs when they suddenly received an emergency flight assignment and had to return to the airport.]]

“Mrs. Hayes, we need to get back to the airport now. Please give Captain Hayes our regards. Also, this is his resignation letter–management has already approved it. Could you please pass it on to him?“]

After taking the letter and fruit basket from them, Charlotte saw the reason for Blake’s resignation. It listed just one point:[]

“For three years after joining the company. I flew the America–Australia route. Each time I landed on that unfamiliar Australian soil, I felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness. While navigating the clouds, I would experience a surreal disconnection from the ground, as if I had lost my bearings. Until recently, when I heard news of an old acquaintance, I suddenly realized that perhaps what I’ve been chasing my entire life wasn’t the blue sky, but the shadow of a certain person. Now that she has returned, I’ve found my direction again, and I only wish to settle down.“[]

Charlotte had always believed that Blake’s passion was the boundless sky and the freedom of soaring through the heavens.

She never imagined that his true devotion had always been to Madeline Grant.

He became a pilot to please her, became a captain so he could fly to Australia to see her anytime, and now he was resigning because she had returned.]]

Meanwhile, Charlotte had merely occupied the position of his wife without ever entering his heart.

She closed her eyes in despair, remembering five years ago when Blake gave that speech in the auditorium, passionate and articulate.]

That was the moment she fell for him–the same moment he was striving to get closer to Madeline.[]

How pitiful, how laughable.

Now, the person he’d been waiting for had returned, and it was time for Charlotte to step aside.[]

After returning home, Charlotte called a senior classmate who had been trying to recruit her, agreeing to co–found a design studio.]]

After graduation, because Blake had flight assignments almost every week, she had become a housewife to better care for their home.[]

Now that she had resolved to leave, she decided to pursue her dreams again.[]

Her former classmate didn’t hide her excitement at the news.]

“Charlotte, back in school, our professors always said you were born for design. Everyone’s been waiting for you to shine in the industry. I’m so glad you’ve made this decision! I’ll fly back tomorrow to discuss the contract with you. Let’s set up the studio in Chicago–after all, you’re married, so this way you can still take care of your family.“]
