Midnight Call Ch 60
Charlotte stayed in the hospital for over a week. Blake never visited again.
He sent texts saying he needed to go on a business trip for a while, occasionally having his assistant deliver gifts and health supplements.
Looking at the jewelry and nutritional products almost filling her hospital room, Charlotte felt nothing.[]
When she opened her phone, she saw photos Madeline had sent her of herself with Blake over the past few days.]
In the pictures, they sat on coastal rocks watching the red sun rise over the horizon; they stood side by side beneath the majestic view of sunlit mountains; in a centuries–old chapel with stained glass windows, they lit candles and whispered prayers for each other’s happiness…
After the photos came a long text from Madeline:[]
“All these places in the photos are where Blake took me when we were dating. We created our most beautiful memories in these spots and made promises of forever to each other. Now he says he’s taking me away to clear my mind, but every stop is revisiting our past. Don’t you think he, like me, desperately wishes we could go back to how things were?“]
Charlotte silently read these messages without replying.[]
After recovering from her injuries, she returned home alone, only to hear Blake’s brother’s voice at the door.]
“Blake, haven’t you already made Madeline’s ex–husband bankrupt and drowning in debt? He’ll never recover, and Madeline’s condition is slowly improving. Why are you drowning yourself in alcohol the moment you got back?“]
Through the partially open door, Charlotte saw a pile of empty bottles in front of Blake.[]
He appeared drunk, his usually cool face flushed, his eyes glazed with moisture.[]
“I just hate my former self. Why couldn’t I let go of that ridiculous pride? Why didn’t I actively seek reconciliation? Why–why did I waste five years, torturing myself and allowing Madeline to be ruthlessly hurt by someone else?“]
Seeing him like this, his brothers seemed to feel for him.[]
“But it was Madeline who insisted on breaking up and harshly said whoever suggested getting back together first would be a dog. She also ignored the advice of friends and family, insisting on marrying abroad, which gave that scumbag the chance to hurt her. None of this is your fault–you shouldn’t blame yourself!“]
“Yes, Madeline married someone else, and you married Charlotte. You’re already on separate paths–why continue this entanglement with her? She doesn’t deserve your wholehearted devotion. You should cherish what’s in front of you! Charlotte is completely devoted to you–you can’t break her heart!“]
“We’ve all seen how good Charlotte has been to you these years. While you were flying all over, she managed the household and took care of your parents. When your stomach suffered from overwork, she went to great lengths to nurse you back to health. When you came home at three or four in the morning, she would stay up all night keeping food warm, waiting for you. She’s so good to you, loving you to her core–can’t you turn around and see her?“]
The room fell silent for a moment. Blake finished his drink in one gulp and whispered:[]
“No matter how good she is, she’s not the right one.“]
Chapter 6
Hearing these words directly from his mouth, Charlotte felt as if a knife had pierced her heart, leaving her bleeding and in unbearable pain.
Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she closed her eyes, her face deathly pale. In her mind flashed the moment Blake had agreed to marry her.
Back then, he said he thought they were a good match.
Now he was saying she wasn’t the right person.]]
If in his eyes this marriage was a mistake, then what did her three years of time and love amount to?]
She would never know the answer.
And the answer no longer mattered to her anyway.
