Maureen lowered the piano lid and stood up.
Geoffrey leaned against the doorframe, his tall frame casting a shadow. “Why did you stop?”
Back when he was swamped with work, he never knew Maureen played so beautifully. Only when Adrian came de- manding favors did he overhear her playing once.
That day, furious with Maureen’s brother Adrian, he remembered taking it out on her–scolding her harshly.

Maureen paused, then added, “The agreement’s ready. Shall we review it?”

Geoffrey suddenly remarked, “You play well. What was that piece?
Haven’t heard it before.”
Maureen froze at his words.
“You… haven’t?”
That melody–she’d composed it during her school years, played it just for him once.
Geoffrey halted, his dark eyes piercing as he asked meaningfully, “Do I?”

Maureen thought he’d forgotten and shook her head: “I was just asking casually. I wrote this piece back in high school, never released it.”
Hearing she composed it, Geoffrey looked at her with new respect.
Only now did he realize how talented his wife was.
Geoffrey walked ahead, and Maureen stared blankly at his retreating figure.
His reaction seemed genuinely unfamiliar with the melody…
Though puzzled, Maureen didn’t dwell on it.
After all, Geoffrey was busy. After all these years, how could he possibly remember one piece?
Back in the room, Maureen brought her handwritten agreement and placed it before him.
“Review this. If everything’s acceptable, I’ll print it for our signatures.”
Geoffrey took the document and skimmed through it.

“Hope you keep your word.”
Geoffrey scoffed at her words: “You too.”
“Don’t worry.”
It was still early. Maureen took the agreement to her room to work on today’s sheet music.
She wasn’t serious about the agreement–just trying a new tactic to make him want what he couldn’t have.
Who knows if it’ll work!
Geoffrey remained in the living room. After Maureen left, he picked up his copy of the agreement and fed it straight into the shredder.
What agreement? Only what he willingly acknowledged held any weight.
He’d see what new tricks Maureen had up her sleeve!
That evening, Geoffrey went out.
Not long after he left, Maureen got Justin’s text.
It said Geoffrey had left, told her to find a way out, that there was something to tell her.
