The rain soaked the hem of her dress as she impatiently stormed forward to question Maureen.
As she was about to snap, she saw Maureen’s pale face and closed eyes.
She was stunned on the spot.
“Maureen…”
Before she could ask what had happened, her gaze fell upon the empty pill bottle blown by the wind.
As she strode forward and picked it up, the words “Sleeping Pills” came into her view.
What Maureen had said a few days earlier echoed in her mind.
“If I die, you’ll no longer be my mother, and I’ll owe you nothing. Is that correct?”
The umbrella fell to the ground.
Clutching the bottle, she glared at Maureen in great disbelief. Her face was drenched, perhaps by the rainwater or her
tears.
“You damned girl! How dare you!
“I gave you your life!”
Her rosy lips trembled.
In the car, Adrian saw Noelle standing in the rain. He didn’t know what was going on.
He walked over and was astonished upon seeing Maureen in Gareth’s arms.

Coming back to his senses, he panicked. “Mom, what should we do? I’ve already used Mr. Carter’s money to start a new company.”
Hearing this, Gareth finally understood what had changed Maureen, the woman who used to be so tough and outgo- ing.
Noelle clenched her fists, her gaze fierce.
Glaring at Maureen, she roared, “Why didn’t you die after you got married? Why?!”
Gareth couldn’t bear to listen anymore.
Glaring at Noelle and Adrian, he spat, “Get lost!

It was only then that they noticed the man standing in front of them, whose presence was as commanding as Geof- frey’s.
“Who are you?” Adrian stepped forward. “Maureen’s my sister. And you’re telling us to get lost? What right do you have?”
He turned to Noelle. “Mom, I just received a call from Mr. Carter’s subordinate. We gotta take Maureen to the wed- ding now, or we’re toast.”
Noelle calmed down and said, steeling herself, “Take her to the car. Even if she wants to die, it has to wait until after. the wedding.”
“OK.” Adrian nodded.
Then he walked toward Gareth, ready to take Maureen away.
But just as he reached out, Gareth drove a powerful kick into his chest, sending him stumbling backward.
With a thud, he landed about a meter away. Clutching his chest, he was in so much pain that he couldn’t even utter a sound.
Gasping, Noelle quickly stepped forward to help him up. Then she glared at Gareth fiercely. “How dare you hurt my
son!”
Gareth held Maureen firmly in his arms, his eyes chillingly icy.
Rainwater dripped from his hair and fell to the ground.
He approached Adrian and Noelle step by step, his expression darkening to the utmost.
Then he said, his tone carrying a dangerous edge, “One more word, and you’re dead.”
Frightened, the two didn’t dare to make a sound.
While leaving with Maureen in his arms, Gareth reminded Noelle, “Reenie mentioned a recording in her suicide note.
“In the recording, you promised to cut all ties with her. Surely, you remember that, right?”
Maureen didn’t want to be Noelle’s daughter anymore…
She knew the recording had no legal power and couldn’t sever her tie with Noelle.
But she also knew what kind of person Noelle was.
To Noelle, her reputation meant everything.
If the recording was made public, she’d be seen as the sinner who caused her daughter’s death.
Facing Gareth’s threat, Noelle fell silent. In the end, she helped the injured Adrian up and left in disgrace.
