The second you cut out the toxic people and drama from your life, the universe starts surprising you.

Like today, two years later.

My company might not be some Fortune 500 giant, but it’s got a solid reputation in the city.

Slow and steady? Hell no–we’ve been on fire.

And since we’re in the same industry, I’ve obviously heard what’s gone down at Jace’s company these past two years.

Apparently, one of his mom’s relatives wormed his way into the company and, surprise surprise, started skimming money and embezzling funds.

It got so bad, they couldn’t cover the hole.

Boom. Everything exploded.

Cash flow dried up, and the books were a disaster.

So Jace sued the guy–who, by the way, was his actual uncle. Blood relative.

Of course, his mom had a meltdown. She made a whole damn scene.

Did Jace back down? Nope.

He went full savage and insisted his own uncle rot in jail.

When Jace decides to be heartless, he really doesn’t mess around.

But honestly, can we expect loyalty from a guy who cheats?

And like clockwork, when it rains, it pours.

That whole embezzlement mess triggered a full–blown financial audit.

And guess what?

Mid–audit, someone anonymously reported them for tax fraud.

I mean, I knew the second Jace let his mom shove her idiot relatives into the company, the countdown had started.

I just didn’t think it’d crash and burn this fast.

When Tatum heard the news, she nearly choked on her coffee.

“Thank God I got out while I could. I always knew that woman’s brain was a walking disaster.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Whoever reported them–I should send ‘em a gift basket.”

Tatum snorted.

“You want me to put out a Craigslist ad? ‘Seeking: anonymous hero, must hate Jace‘?”

After all that, Jace’s company tanked–hard.

It spiraled so fast, it made headlines

Meanwhile. I swooped in and magged a bunch of his top clients. Business was booming

And sure, Jace finally grew a spine–cleaned house, kicked his mom and her freeloading cousins out, and launched a new product line.

But the damage was d

Banks started pulling loans and demanding early repayments.

No credit, no funding, no options.

His company went belly up. Officially bankrupt.

Hearing the news brought me back

I remembered the last time Jace’s company had a crisis.

He’d cry in the middle of the night, and I’d hold him.

Then go out during the day begging for help, calling in every favor.

Those days? I was either in a meeting or on my way to one.

He tried to quit a dozen times. I begged him not to.

And when we pulled through, he looked me in the eyes and said,

“Sloane, you’ve done so much for me. I swear I’ll make sure you never lose.”

*I’ll give you the life you deserve.”

Well plot twist–he did make sure I lost. Big time.

But I guess it all worked out, huh?

Didn’t he once say he’d give up the whole company if it meant getting back with Blaire?

Well wish granted.

Guess he’s a man of his word after all

Life really is one long soap opera.
