The Ex Who Became His Obsession Novel Ch 54

“Aly.” Beatrice hurried forward and took her hand. “What brings you here?”

Alyssia didn’t even bother with pleasantries. “Where’s Leonard? How is he?”

“It’s okay,” Beatrice said quickly, her

Alyssia’s nerves were still taut. “But

old me he wasn’t going to make it.”

“At first, we thought he wasn’t going to make it, but then he pulled through,” Beatrice snapped. “Joseph got knocked silly in the crash, started blabbering nonsense, and scared us half to death.”

Then Beatrice led Alyssia to see Leonard.

Leonard had just finished a series of tests and had already been moved

Joseph stood outside, glaring at Alyssia as if she were his mortal enemy.

Beatrice raised her hand as if to slap Joseph. “What’s with that look?” she snapped.

Joseph, eyes red with fury, lashed out, “Ms. Clairmont had to go and dump Mr. Rivera, He was so heartbroken, and that’s why the accident happened.”

Theodore couldn’t take it anymore. “Nonsense. Do you really think Leon is some lovesick teenager who’d risk his life over a breakup?

“He crashed because he was careless and driving while exhausted. I told him to leave work early, but he wouldn’t listen. Hmph. Don’t you dare pin this on Aly.”

Theodore had always been incredibly proud of his son.

After scolding Joseph and standing up for Alyssia, Theodore still couldn’t help but brag about his beloved son.

Theodore strode toward the hospital room. “I’ll go in and check on him first,” he said, gently stopping Beatrice and Alyssia. “You two wait out here for

now.”

‘If things aren’t looking good, we shouldn’t alarm the ladies,’ Theodore thought to himself.

Beatrice and Alyssia waited outside, their hands tightly clasped.

A few minutes later, Theodore stormed out of the room, his face dark with rage.

Both Beatrice and Alyssia felt like their hearts were about to stop from the shock.

“What’s wrong?” Beatrice asked, her voice trembling with fear.

“Go in.” Theodore gritted his teeth, his face twisted in disgust. “I refuse to acknowledge such an embarrassing son.”

Beatrice hesitated. “What?”

Beatrice was about to go in with Alyssia when Theodore quickly stopped Alyssia. “Aly, you’d better stay out. Leonard’s badly hurt. There’s blood everywhere. I don’t want you to get scared.”

Alyssia murmured, “Oh.”

Truth be told, she wasn’t even sure if she should go in and

see him.

They were already over as a couple, and whether he lived or died was none of her concern now.

But then again, they did have over a decade of shared history. He was the Rivera family’s heir, the only son of the family that adopted Alyssia

A few minutes later, Beatrice came out, her expression complicated.

Theodore pulled his wife aside, and the couple huddled together, whispering out

of Alyssia’s earshot.

“What do you think?” Theodore said, “Did the accident knock him silly? Is he still my brilliant, strong-willed son?”

Beatrice gleefully fiddled with her phone. “Don’t worry. I’ve recorded it all. When he comes to his senses, I’ll show him the footage. That’ll mortify him

Theodore turned to his wife and asked, “Maybe we shouldn’t let Aly see him before he comes to. It’s so embarrassing”

Beatrice scoffed, “Now I finally see where Leon gets that self-defeating pride. You his teeth and touches it out anyway. What’s the point of keeping up the act?”

Theodore refused to admit it, grinning shamelessly as he protested, “I’m not faking it. Honestly, I’d be completely lost without you, darling” Beatrice wasn’t moved in the slightest. She shot back with a teasing smirk, “Shouldn’t you? How dare you go on living without me?”

Theodore pulled her into a tight hug. “Yes, you are right. Darling, you’re my whole reason for living.”

The couple was all lovey-dovey, hugging and cuddling, completely unlike parents whose son had just been in a car accident.

The sight left Joseph utterly dumbfounded.

Meanwhile, Alyssia was on her phone. “Mr. Harlow, are you up? Did you get my first draft? No rush, really. I’m not in a hurry. Just let me know if you have any feedback after you’ve read it. I’ll be waiting for your response.”

Joseph covered his mouth, his shoulders shaking with uncontrollable sobs. ‘Oh, Mr. Rivera, I’m all you have left now,’ he wondered, “They don’t deserve you.’

In the end, Alyssia never got to see Leonard.

She kept vigil at the hospital for two hours, during which she and Beatrice went to check on Rosalie for a while.

Beatrice explained to her that during the accident, Joseph had been knocked unconscious on

impact.

Leonard hadn’t lost consciousness. But his unhealed stomach ulcer flared up again from the violent impact.

Slumped over the steering wheel, he vomited blood while muttering deliriously, scaring the living daylights out of the truck driver who had hit him.

Of course, when Joseph came to later, the sight also scared him out of his wits.

Beatrice explained, “He got knocked out and thought he w gotten rattled, too.

“Oh, no, actually, he is a fool to begin with. That’s why he called you and started blabbering all that nonsense.”

Beatrice had been filling Alyssia in on the details.

She studied Alyssia’s expression for a moment, then asked tentatively, “Aly, would you like to know what his last words were?”

Alyssia chuckled and said, “But he’s fine, isn’t he? Talking about last words now just feels like tempting fate.”

Beatrice let out a soft sigh and wondered, ‘Aly is no longer interested, after all.’

“The doctors say Leonard’s recovery will take some time. We might have to postpone his grandpa’s birthday celebration,” Beatrice added,

“Oh, does Mr. Rivera know about the accident?” Alyssia asked.

“Shh,” Beatrice said, raising a finger to her lips. “His grandparents don’t know about this. Don’t tell them; we don’t want to worry them?”

Alyssia nodded in understanding. ‘They are getting on in years,’ she thought. ‘It’s best not to let them worry!

“But what about Mr. Rivera’s birthday?” Alyssia asked, her voice trailing off.

“It’s fine. Leonard’s grandpa was just saying the other day that he wasn’t really keen on celebrating his birthday so early this year. I’ll echo him in a bit and suggest we move it later instead,” Beatrice said.

Beatrice was quick-witted. She had been about to ask Alyssia if she wanted to see Leonard.

Theodore thought his son was in an embarrassing state and didn’t want Alyssia to see him. He also worried that if Aly saw him like this, she would want nothing to do with him and wouldn’t even consider getting back together.

But deep down, Beatrice still held onto a sliver of hope. ‘What if Aly saw Leonard like this, and her heart softened?’ she wondered.

But then she had second thoughts. Aly had once been so humble and self-sacrificing for Leonard, yet he never truly appreciated her devotion.

But now that Aly had dumped him, and he was in this pathetic state. If Beatrice were Aly, she would despise a guy like that. In the end, Beatrice decided to just let it go.

Her children’s lives were their own to lead; all Beatrice could do was respect their choices.

As it happened, Alyssia was swamped with work.

William called. He was thoroughly pleased with her draft.

“Hard to believe you’re new at this. Love your writing. This works, no notes,” said William.

So Alyssia was just about to head back to Vanguard Media. “Mr. and Mrs. Rivera, I think I should get going now,” she said.

“You’re leaving? Where do you think you’re going?” Joseph exploded. “You can’t go. Mr. Rivera can’t survive without you.”

Theodore bellowed, “Stop right there. What do you think you’re doing?”

‘Don’t tell me this fool has caught my son’s foolishness in there?’ Theodore thought.

Upon seeing the stunned expression and clear desire to distance herself on Alyssia’s face, Theodore’s resolve to keep her and Leonard apart grew even

stronger.

“Go ahead. Work comes first,” Theodore said with an understanding wave.

Alyssia bid them farewell and was just about to leave.
