The Ex Who Became His Obsession Novel Ch 68
It was Leonard calling.
Charlie knew Leonard was calling to give him a hard time.
A long–suppressed turmoil welled up in Charlie’s chest…
But Charlie hesitated for a few seconds, then picked it up anyway.
“Charlie, look what you’ve done.” Leonard’s voice cut through, cold as steel slicing dark ice. “The Dixon family certainly has a proud tradition of ingratitude.”
Charlie was left speechless.
Charlie couldn’t even refute it…
Suddenly, Charlie felt a gentle tap on his shoulder from behind.
Turning around, Charlie found Alyssia standing behind him. She pointed at his hand, where blood had already smeared onto his phone.
Even with shame still weighing on his heart, Charlie felt a sudden warmth blossom in his chest.
He turned back to continue, his composure restored. “Thanks for the heads–up, but maybe we should both focus on keeping our own houses in order.”
Vanguard Media had a first aid room.
Alyssia accompanied Charlie to get his wound dressed. She whispered, “Charlie, there’s no need to get so worked up over this. For many people, these things just don’t matter.”
Alyssia had always known that no one truly shares another’s joy or sorrow.
Alyssia thought, ‘When the Clairmont family first fell, it reportedly sent shockwaves through Elmbrook’s financial circles. Yet even then, did anyone truly shed a single genuine tear for their tragedy?
‘The Clairmont family went to such lengths to shield me and suppress all information about the incident–but wasn’t that just as much about protecting themselves–and Leonard?

All this talk about who owes whom a favor? It’s nothing but an ill–fated entanglement passed down from the previous generation…”
But looking at his hand, now bearing yet another fresh wound, Charlie still remarked with irony, “Ingratitude is one of humanity’s basest traits. In that regard, the Rivera family is truly ‘commendable“.”
Charlie thought to himself, ‘The Dixon family… pales in comparison.‘
Charlie turned to Alyssia, his voice laced with reproach. “Why didn’t you tell me about what happened in the Finance Department?”
Alyssia just grinned. “Oh, it’s nothing. I’m not really familiar with finance, so they tried to make things hard for me by dumping a pile of old backup drafts for me to proofread,
“But thanks to that crash course, I quickly got a handle on all the key players, the structure, and the different circles and.

hierarchies in the industry. I should probably even thank them
for it!”
“But a lot of that information is useless or just plain wrong,” Charlie said, the ache in his voice betraying how much he cared,
“Well, I’ll take my time sifting through it all. Even misinformation reflects certain perspectives, and the unspoken expectations of onlookers,” Alyssia said calmly. “Others might think I’m getting the short end of the stick, but to me, it’s just a bit of hardship at
most.”
Alyssia thought, ‘Enduring hardship goes against human nature, but for some things, you can’t swim against the current without going through tough times.‘
As for running errands like fetching stockings and coffee.
‘Just consider it my daily workout.
‘They’re just making me run these errands to see me throw a tantrum or break down in frustration, aren’t they?
‘Well, I won’t give them the satisfaction. We’ll see who ends up losing their cool in the end, she thought.
Alyssia was called back to the Entertainment Department that same day, leaving her no time to interview William.
But Alyssia contacted William and led the interview for the next day.
The Finance Department’s disciplinary decision regarding Katherine had also been announced.
She was dismissed with immediate effect.
Katherine’s editor–in–chief, along with Brianna, also had their bonuses docked for lax oversight and inadequate content vetting.
The private group chat instantly blew up.
[Same warning from Clairivera Group, but look at the difference!]
[One’s treasured like gold, the other’s dumped like trash.]
[Seriously? Where can we even complain? Even Brianna got dragged into this–all because of one damn photo, just one photo!]
[And it was that golden girl Alyssia who deleted the photo! If she thought there was a risk, couldn’t she have just warned someone properly instead of deleting it outright and getting someone completely busted? What was she trying to pull?]
[Seriously, it’s infuriating! She’s just a proofreader–who does Alyssia think she is, acting like that?]
Katherine had worked at Vanguard Media for three years and had made plenty of friends. When she was fired over this incident, her colleagues were up in arms, flooding the group chats with messages of outrage and support.
But this time, the tide wasn’t completely one–sided.
Suddenly, someone broke the silence.
[If you messed up, just own it and stop embarrassing yourself. Got some inside scoop–even Brianna’s dad got chewed out by Mr. Dixon over this. Trust me, this goes way beyond just a warning from Clairivera Group.]

Chapter 68
[Vanguard Media’s Finance Department has always had a rule: no reporting on InveSight Capital. If you want to blame someone. blame your precious manager for never telling you.]
This private group chat wasn’t monitored by anyone above editor–in–chief level, and it wasn’t just Finance Department employees
in there either.
The speaker was an editor–in–chief from the Social Affairs Department–a Vanguard veteran.
The moment she spoke, a sudden hush fell over the group chat for a moment.
But in the blink of an eye, a queue of @mentions lined up for her in the chat.
All the previously silent lurkers were suddenly flushed out, bombarding the chat with questions about why reporting on InveSight Capital was forbidden.
The Vanguard veteran fell silent.
Another insider chimed in: [Honestly, you guys in the Finance Department can’t really be blamed for not knowing. The manager’s family was dead set on securing their daughter’s future, so they deliberately scrubbed all records of the department’s founding members.]
[That’s right–I’m talking about InveSight Capital, who used to be one of the founders and shareholders of Vanguard Media, the predecessor to your current Finance Department. After InveSight Capital’s incident, the Rivera family demanded a media blackout, and Vanguard was among the first to comply.]
[Let me be blunt–if this article goes out, it’s just handing Bright Orange Media more ammunition. Don’t even compare it to Leonard’s little scandals; the Entertainment Department has hard evidence on him and Milena, and Leonard’s already pulling his hair out trying to deal with Vanguard.]
[Vanguard is strictly forbidden from reporting on InveSight Capital–I heard all the media companies involved signed NDAS about it back then!]
After dropping that bombshell, the insider waited just long enough for everyone to read it–then quietly withdrew the message.
Just then, the veteran Vanguard editor who had spoken earlier stepped in again.
[So stop blaming that new girl Alyssia–she actually sayed your damn career, got it? If you leave now, you can still find another job. But if both Clairivera Group and Bright Orange Media come after you, you’ll be blacklisted from this entire industry.]
In the private group chat, all the previously aggressive keyboard warriors fell silent.
It wasn’t just the Vanguard veteran’s decisive words.
Also because the Social Affairs Department was the one force at Vanguard Media no one dared to cross.
There used to be a running joke at Vanguard Media: for any other department, you just signed an employment contract–but if you wanted to join the Social Affairs Department, you were basically signing your own death warrant.
The Social Affairs Department reporters? Every last one of them is a fearless daredevil.
The Social Affairs and Finance Departments were constantly at odds, but most of the time, the Finance Department got absolutely steamrolled by Social Affairs.
“Ha! The oldest core department at Vanguard Media, and what are you? Just a bunch of spineless, greedy yes–men–always brown.

nosing the higher–ups and kicking down the underdogs. Pathetic!”
Slamming his keyboard aside, the Social Affairs Department veteran crossed his arms, ready to let loose.
“Look, I’m just saying, if anyone in the Finance Department still had even an ounce of InveSight Capital’s original spirit, they wouldn’t have sunk to this pathetic state–just jumping on bandwagons and putting out toothless fluff, constantly seething with envy that our department always outperforms them.”
“Alright, don’t waste your breath on them. Finance has long been the Parkers‘ turf.
Another colleague chimed in to comfort their team. “Man, what a shame the original founders of InveSight Capital have either perished or scattered to the winds. I’d love to see them make a glorious comeback and deliver a good slap in the face to the Parkers.”
“Ah well…”
“If I were one of the original InveSight Capital crew, I’d have gone solo long ago–you know they eventually cashed out anyway.”
“Shh, drop it.”
The murmurs gradually died down.
Silence settled over the Social Affairs Department once more.
