The Ex Who Became His Obsession Novel Ch 74
Alyssia was stunned.
In that moment, even though she knew it couldn’t possibly be true. Alv
rushed forward and grabbed Mabel by the shoulders.
With her voice trembling, she asked urgently, “Do you know me? Are you saying you’re my mom?”
Mabel threw her arms around Aly, sobbing uncontrollably. “Aly, it’s bo years?”
thirteen years since we last saw each other, Aly, have you been alright all these
With tears streaming down her face, Mabel clung to Aly and sobbed, “Aly, I’ve missed you so much all these years. It’s been so hard without you…”
For a fleeting moment, Alyssia almost believed her words.
Her tears and the raw emotion in her voice were simply too real to be faked.
Just then, William stormed in.
Grim–faced, William was about to throw Alyssia out immediately.
Mabel clung to Aly for dear life, turning urgently to William. “William, look! It’s Aly!” she cried.
William froze on the spot.
“W–what did you call me?”
Mabel had been battling mental illness for over a decade.
At first, she and her husband discreetly sought treatment, but as her condition took a sharp turn for the worse, she sometimes failed to recognize people and even injured William on several occasions.
Doctors advised William to admit her to a psychiatric hospital, but after inspecting the conditions of those places, he abandoned the idea.
They were childhood sweethearts who had shared decades of love, and William simply couldn’t trust the environment or the people there.
Knowing her illness could affect her husband’s reputation, Mabel once
I divorce, but William refused.
When she was lucid, she told him she wished to recuperate in a traditional courtyard villa, and if she had an episode, William should confine her to prevent her from hurting herself or others.
William knew she was strong–willed by nature and would rather die than let
anyone know about her mental ilmness.
He concealed everything, meticulously caring for his wife. But ten years ago, a journalist nearly stumbled upon one of Mabel’s episodes.
Since then, William had refused all interviews.
When Alyssia entered the room, she immediately noticed the padded walls and floor, along with a long chain that allowed Mabel to move about freely.
Yet despite these precautions, the ailing Mabel still managed to create utter chaos.
For the past two years, she had completely failed to recognize William–whenever he approached, she would erupt in violent curses, kick over the delivered meals, and tear apart anything in the room she could shred.
Never in his wildest dreams had William imagined the day would come when his wife would regain her sanity.
“Don’t you remember Aly? It’s Aly… I told you before, we were going to adopt her!” Mabel exclaimed excitedly, clinging to Alyssia.

Chapter 74
It all came back to William in a rush.
“You’re…” he stammeled, still in shock,
Never in his wildest dreams had he expected to run into that little girl from thirteen years ago right there.
At that time, Mabel’s mental illness had already become quite severe. She checked into a mental health facility under an assumed name, hoping in keep her condition a secret. There, she unexpectedly befriended a little girl named Aly, who was suffering from aphasia.
William heard that the girl had been severely traumatized by the loss of both her parents, leaving her unable to speak and with diminished cognitive
abilities.
When their young daughter died in a tragic accident, the couple was devastated. Afterwards, Mabel suffered multiple miscarriages until she could no longer conceive.
That loss became a wound in her heart that never truly healed, eventually turning into a lifelong illness.
When Mabel met little Alyssia and learned she had no family left, she immediately felt the urge to adopt her.
A day
During that time, Mabel’s mental state visibly improved. Every day, she would make time to visit Alyssia, talk to her, gently coax her to call her “Mom, and watch as the light gradually returned to the girl’s eyes.
And then, something miraculous happened.
After days and days of Mabel’s devoted care, Alyssia suddenly looked up at her and, in a clear voice, called out, “Mom.”
Mabel was ecstatic.
She immediately told William to begin the adoption proceedings, already planning how to build a closer bond with Alyssia.
Then Alyssia vanished without a trace…
Mabel flew into a rage–that very night, she had a breakdown.
William hurried to look up the girl’s records, only to find that the name field contained just “Aly.”
He realized that Aly must have been adopted long ago, and as soon as her condition improved, she was immediately taken away….
What he hadn’t expected was that, just like his own family, the other family also wanted to keep their family secrets hidden from outsiders.
William tried to comfort Mabel, “Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. We can always adopt another child later.”
Mabel burst into tears. “She called me ‘Mom‘! How can you say it wasn’t meant to be? I don’t want anyone else I only want Aly!”
She became fixated and couldn’t break free.
Every day, she wandered the streets and alleys of Elmbrook, searching neighborhood after neighborhood, checking school after school–absolutely determined to find her Aly.
One day, during a psychotic episode at the mall, she tried to snatch another child, prompting the terrified family to call the police.
William even tried adopting another child.
However, bringing a child into the home only exacerbated Mabel’s condition. If the girl was around Alyssia’s age, Mabel would delusionally believe she was William’s illegitimate daughter. If the child was younger, she would even attempt to violently throw them.
Later, she locked herself in the courtyard and attempted suicide.
They managed to save her, but she was broken beyond repair.
Chapter 74
From then on, she never left the backyard again.
Lately, Alyssia worked late–night shifts every day. She always turned down Charlie’s offer of a ride, choosing instead to take the subway for pet or fro then get off and slip into a secluded alley, where the Harlow family’s private car would be waiting for her.
No matter how late it was, Mabel would be there, waiting patiently in the car.
She personally prepared homemade soup for Alyssia and made sure she drank it all.
Then she’d drive Alyssia home, never forgetting to hand her breakfast for the next day.
Besides that, she would text Alyssia all day long.
[Have you eaten yet?]
[Are you tired from work?]
[When are you getting off work?]
[What do you want for a late–night snack and for breakfast tomorrow?”
Not even her biological mother was ever this doting!
Beatrice had been good to Alyssia, but her care was just a fraction of Mabel’s.
Alyssia’s replies were straightforward.
[Not tired. Just grabbing some coffee downstairs.]
[Not tired. At the mall buying stockings.]
[Not tired. Just proofreading manuscripts daily…]
It wasn’t until today that the manuscript swap incident erupted.
“Mabel, someone at the company is wronging Aly. She really needs your help right now,” William said gently.
Mabel hadn’t seen outsiders in ten years–it terrified her.
But for her Aly, she told herself, ‘I have to be strong!‘
She dyed her hair, treated herself to a full makeover, applied makeup, and slipped into a brand–new dress. Arm in arm with William, she walked confidently into Vanguard Media…
“Mr. Dixon, we really have Aly to thank for this,” William said, enthusiastically recommending Alyssia. “My wife has struggled with depression and prefers to keep to herself. Even though these were just rumors, they could have seriously damaged her reputation and caused her a lot of psychological stress:
“Aly risked her job and went to the printing plant in the middle of the night to fix the layout–she’s got both courage and brains. Truly impressive for someone her age!”
William meant every word.
Mabel’s condition was finally improving, but just as she was on the verge of recovery, the decade–long secret was exposed. Given her temperament this shock could easily trigger a severe relapse.
With both influential VIPs having spoken, Daniel knew he had no choice but to reward Alyssia this time.
Chapter 74
He knew Diana was actually somewhat wronged.
As a media veteran, he had sharp instincts.
Mabel might seem normal at first glance, but her constant anxiety, her overly intense focus on Alyssia, and those odd looks all told him the might really have a mental illness…
But at this point, Vanguard Media didn’t dare to delve deeper into such sensitive matters.
Still, Daniel couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret at missing out on such a bombshell exclusive.
If Diana had succeeded, Vanguard would have faced pressure from William and Nathan, but in the end, they could just fire Diana and issue a public apology–problem solved.
They’d have gained the buzz, saved face, and outpaced Bright Orange Media by a wide margin…
But now…
After seeing off William and Nathan, Daniel motioned for Alyssia to stay behind.
“Alyssia, how have you been all these years with the Rivera family?”
Alyssia remembered this as the first time she’d met Daniel, but for some inexplicable reason, she just couldn’t quite warm up to him.
She nodded politely. “I’ve been doing well, Mr. Dixon.”
Daniel said with a practiced warm smile, “Seeing you reminds me of your mother–she was just as gutsy and determined back then. By the way, you did an outstanding job this time. Is there any reward you’d like? How about promoting you to editor–in–chief?”
“I don’t need any reward–I was just doing my job,” Alyssia politely declined. “But if I may be so bold… could I recommend my managing editor, Lauren, for a promotion? She’s truly outstanding.”
“Fine,” Daniel agreed readily. “It’s just some lowly department head position–if even someone like Brianna can handle it, anyone could.”
He turned to Charlie. “Charlie, go make the arrangements.”
Alyssia rushed back to the office, dashed over to Lauren, and, for the first time, threw her arms around her shoulders.
“Lauren, what did I say before I went to the printing plant?” Alyssia asked.
Lauren played dumb. “What did you say?”
Someone in the department suddenly exclaimed, “Wow! Lauren! No–Manager! You got promoted!”
HR issued the promotion notice: [Lauren was officially appointed Head of the Entertainment Department for her outstanding performance.]
And as for Alyssia…
“Alyssia!” Lauren gave her an enthusiastic pat on the back. “Editor Alyssia, not bad at all!”
Alyssia was appointed Managing Editor, taking over Lauren’s former position.
