“I can’t believe Selene actually went through with it,” Vanessa said, shaking her head slowly. “Rejecting her mate like that. Most wolves break under half the pressure she’s been under.”
“She didn’t just survive it,” I murmured, staring at the teacup in my hands. “She rose above it.”
Vanessa nodded in agreement, but my mind had already wandered. I was proud of Selene, so proud, but her story stirred something painful inside me. Because I knew exactly what it meant to be betrayed by someone who was sup- posed to love you unconditionally. I had worn the same heartbreak.
Even my sons didn’t know the full truth. They only knew the part I was willing to tell. But sooner or later, I’d have to tell them everything.
Flashback to twenty Twenty Years Ago. I was nineteen at the time, young and hopeful, and completely in love. That week, I had been visiting Mason’s pack, The Crimson. An up and rising pack just a few hours from my father’s lands. Mason was their Alpha. Twenty-five, handsome, confident. And he was my fated mate.
We had met just three weeks before, and the bond had pulled us together like magnets. From the first moment, his scent had lit something up inside me. The way his eyes softened whenever I entered a room made me feel special.
That afternoon, I sat curled in his lap in his office, his strong arms wrapped securely around my waist. My fingers played with the collar of his shirt while he kissed the top of my head. We weren’t rushing into anything physical be- yond kisses and cuddles. I had told him I wanted to wait until after our mating ceremony, and he had said he respect-
ed that.
“I can’t wait to show you off tonight,” Mason whispered, brushing my cheek with his thumb. “You’ll be the most beautiful Luna this pack has ever seen.”
I smiled up at him, “Just don’t forget the mating ceremony is in two days. My parents and brother are arriving tonight.”
He chuckled, deep and easy. “I could never forget. You’ll be mine officially, very soon.”
A sudden knock on the door broke the moment.
“Enter,” Mason called.
The door opened, revealing Bailey. A tall, muscular warrior she-wolf with sharp eyes and a colder smile. She looked at me like I was something unpleasant stuck to her boot before turning to Mason and flashing him a smile,
I never liked Bailey. She had made it clear from the beginning that she believed she belonged beside Mason. I used to brush it off as jealousy. I figured she’d come around once she saw me by his side during the ceremony.

Mason and Bailey exchanged a look, then I felt them enter a mind link. Silent words passed between them while I sat awkwardly in his lap.
“Alina,” Mason said gently after a moment, “would you mind giving us a few minutes? We need to discuss some ur- gent matters of Pack business.”
I nodded, though something twisted inside me. “Sure.”
I stood and left the office, closing the door behind me. I walked to the guest room they’d given me and sat at the vani- ty, pulling out my makeup kit. I wanted to look perfect for tonight, he was supposed to introduce me to the pack offi- cially as their Luna.
I touched up my eyeliner and ran a brush through my hair. But as I dabbed on a bit of lip color, a sharp, tearing pain surged through my lower abdomen. I gasped and dropped to my knees. I knew what it was.
I had never felt it before, but I had heard the stories. The unbearable agony of betrayal. Of a mate breaking the bond, tainting it by sleeping with someone else.
“No…” I whispered. “No, he wouldn’t.”
But the pain didn’t stop. My heart was racing as I stumbled out of the room and down the hallway. Each step felt like pure agony. I reached the office door and pressed my ear to it, only to freeze at the unmistakable sounds coming from inside.
I didn’t want to believe it. I prayed I was wrong. But my instincts screamed the truth at me. With trembling hands, I pushed the door open just a crack. What I saw shattered me. Bailey was naked, straddling Mason, her head thrown back in pleasure, as she moaned his name over and over.
My body locked in place. My mind tried to tell me it wasn’t real, that maybe it was a misunderstanding. But there was no way to explain away what I was seeing.
The pain… it tore through my chest, so strong it made me nauseous. I knew then that there was no way I would be- come Luna here, let alone be with someone that brought me so much pain. I immediately mind linked my mother. “Mom, please come get me.”
There was a pause, then her voice, filled with worry “Okay, honey, we’re five minutes away.”
I stumbled back from Mason’s office door. My vision was getting blurry and my legs felt like overcooked noodles. I still couldn’t believe what I had just seen, what I had just heard.
I gripped the wall for support and tried to make my way out of the manor, but the pain made the task near impossible. Luckily a young omega spotted me from across the hallway and rushed over with a look of deep concern etched
across her face.
“Lady Alina? Are you okay?” she asked, reaching out to steady me.
My lips trembled until I finally managed to force a few words past them. “Please… help me downstairs.”
She nodded instantly and slung my arm over her shoulder, guiding me carefully through the corridor. I had to clench my jaw tightly to hold back the sobs threatening to escape. But I refused to cry.

It took what felt like a lifetime, but we finally made it down to the ground floor. My legs buckled the moment we reached the last step, but the omega caught me in time, gently helping me to the rails, which I gripped for support.
Just then, Beta Vincent strolled in from an adjacent hallway. He had his usual relaxed smile plastered across his face, completely oblivious to the storm that had shattered my world upstairs.
“Alina,” he greeted cheerfully, “I just heard your parents arrived. I thought they would be hear later this evening.”
I forced myself to smile, clutching tightly to the stair rail to keep myself upright. “That’s wonderful, I guess they just couldn’t wait” I said, trying to inject enthusiasm into my voice. “I’ll go see them right away.”
He gave me a respectful nod, turned and left, and I let my smile fall the second he was out of sight. The omega helped me up once more, and together we shuffled toward the front door.
Through the glass, I saw my parents’ car waiting by the driveway. As we approached the car, I straightened up and pulled away from the omega.
“Thank you,” I whispered to her.
She gave me a concerned look, but nodded and returned to the Pack House. I staggered the last few feet alone, willing myself not to fall apart just yet.
My dad opened the driver’s door, clearly about to get down and help me, but I quickly raised my hand. “Don’t,” I said, my voice shaking. “Keep the car running.”
He paused, then silently obeyed, climbing back into his seat. I yanked the back door open and slid in, collapsing into the seat like all the strength had drained from my body.
Both my parents turned to look at me, their eyes filled with worry. My mother gasped softly at the sight of my tear- streaked face and trembling form. But they both remained silent until we were out of the driveway.
Once we had driven a short distance, my mother gently reached back and touched my knee. “Alina, what happened?”
That was all it took for the tears to come in full force.” Mason…” I choked out, wiping at my cheeks as tears spilled freely. “Mason cheated on me. With… with one of his warriors. I heard them together. They’re having an affair as we speak. It hurts so much mom! It hurts!”
My mother gasped again, this time in horror. My father’s face darkened, rage simmering just beneath the surface as he clenched the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
“I’m in so much pain, Mom,” I whispered. “It hurts so much. I thought… I thought we loved each other. I thought he respected me. I waited for our mating ceremony. I gave him my heart, and he… he just threw it away like it meant nothing.”
My mother twisted around in her seat, her eyes filled with tears of her own. She reached for my hand and squeezed it tightly. “Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered. “We’re so sorry. We never wanted this for you.”
My father didn’t say anything at first. But the muscle in his jaw twitched, and I knew he was fighting for control. When he finally spoke, his voice was gravelly and low. “He will pay for this.”

I didn’t answer. I didn’t want revenge. I didn’t want confrontation. I just wanted freedom, from him, from the bond, from this unbearable ache in my chest.
Eventually, we reached the border between the Crimson pack and my home pack. My father slowed down as we neared the gate and rolled down his window. A young border guard approached.
“Evening, Alpha,” the guard said, saluting respectfully. “Everything okay?”
“Evening,” my father replied smoothly. “We were trying to find a place for dinner. Any good restaurants nearby?”
The guard smiled and launched into a list of recommendations. I slunk further down in my seat, hiding my face as much as possible. The guard didn’t check the car. He didn’t suspect a thing. After a brief farewell, my father drove past the checkpoint and into neutral territory.
A minute later, he pulled over to the side of the road. The car fell into silence, and I looked up to see his eyes watch- ing me in the rearview mirror.
He gave me a firm nod.
It was time. I opened the door and stepped out, I looked up at the sky, at the pale moon peeking out from behind the clouds.
“I, Alina Hart, under the Moon Goddess as my witness,” I said loudly, my voice echoing across the quiet road, “reject Mason of the Crimson as my mate. I will not be bound to a betrayer. I release him from the bond.”
A moment later, a distant, mournful howl echoed from the direction of the Crimson pack. I knew that voice. It was
Mason.
Without another word, I climbed back into the car, slammed the door shut, and leaned my head against the window.
My parents didn’t ask anything else. We drove off into the night, my phone immediately started buzzing endlessly as Mason called over and over, but I didn’t answer.
I’d always had this gnawing feeling in my gut every time I saw Mason and Bailey together. It wasn’t obvious, but I al- ways felt there was something going on between the two. And yet, when I brought it up, when I dared to ask him out- right, he denied it with such ease. He didn’t even hesitate.
“You’re imagining things, babe. Don’t let your insecurities ruin what we have,” he had said once. I wanted to believe him. Goddess, I needed to believe him. Because if I didn’t… everything would collapse.
But I wasn’t wrong. Thank the Moon Goddess I didn’t sleep with that liar. My heart was already shattered, at least I had some dignity left.
Emery, my wolf, snarled in my mind, “I want to rip them both apart.” Her voice echoed.
I closed my eyes for a second, leaning my head against the cool window as the car sped down the road back to our pack. Not now, Emery, I pleaded silently. We’re safe now. The worst part is over.
My father picked up his phone and called his Beta.

“Don’t let Alpha Mason or anyone from the Crimson near our borders,” he said firmly. “If he tries to cross, detain him. Do not wait for my permission.”
He and his Beta went on talking about security details and protocols but my ears stopped registering it all. I was too exhausted. I stared down at my phone and the ridiculous amounts of missed calls and unread messages. All from Ma-
son.
At first his messages started off remorseful, he seemed sorry for his actions and wanted to apologize, but as the min- utes stretched without a response from me, his messages began to take on a more sinister tone.
The last message read: If you think you can leave me and embarrass me in front of the entire pack, think again. You’ re mine. Don’t forget that.
My fingers trembled as I locked the screen and threw the phone back into my bag. The rage boiling in my chest was starting to feel suffocating. But I wouldn’t give him more of my energy. Not anymore.
As we reached the gates of our pack, I sat up straighter. There was a tight line of warriors standing guard. Dozens of them. Our arrival triggered immediate action-the moment our vehicle passed, the gates were locked shut behind us.
But I had barely stepped out of my parents car when I heard the familiar sound of engines behind us. And then some- one shouted my name “ALINA!”
I turned sharply and saw Mason. His car was parked just outside the gates, and he was already out, storming toward us, only to be blocked by our guards.
He wasn’t alone. Bailey stood by his side. The audacity. He brought her? The woman he cheated on me with.
Together, with both my parents flanking me, I walked back toward the gates. The moment he saw me, Mason’s entire demeanor changed. He smiled “Finally,” he said. “Alina, let’s go. The Luna ceremony is already prepared. I’ve spent thousands making everything perfect for you.”
I stared at him, stunned by his arrogance. “You brought her?” I asked flatly, tilting my chin toward Bailey.
He barely blinked. “She’s only here because I wanted her to explain things to you. You’re being irrational, babe. You completely misunderstood the situation.”
“I never thought you were a fool,” I said, locking eyes with him. “But how could you forget the effect cheating has on your mate and the bone you share with them.”
“Of course I do, but you have to believe me, It’s not my fault,” he said, “Look. I was already involved with Bailey be- fore you and I met. And I can’t just leave her because she’s carrying my child.”
I blinked slowly, trying to understand what he’d just said. “You’re telling me that you slept with her, kept it from me, then went ahead to mark me as your mate?” My voice trembled.
He didn’t deny it. Instead, he looked at me with a mix of guilt and arrogance, “I owe her a responsibility, but I want you to be my Luna. That offer still stands.”
I stared at him in disbelief and then laughed.”I don’t want your stupid title” I scoffed. “Bailey can be your Luna, you

already have an heir with her so i guess it all worked out.”
Mason’s face darkened. “Didn’t you hear what I just said? I’m still offering you the Luna title. Do you know how many wolves would kill for a position like that? Don’t ruin your future because you’re angry.” His expression twisted with frustration. “If I have to force you, I will.”
Before he could say another word, my father and brother growled and stepped forward, their eyes glowing with fury.
“If you threaten my daughter again, you’ll regret it,” my father said coldly. “You have 48 hours to accept her rejec- tion. If you don’t reject her, or if you sleep with that woman again, I will destroy your entire pack. And don’t think I won’t. The Council’s already been informed, but if they delay, just know your pack is no match for mine.”
Mason went still. For the first time, his confidence seemed to crack. Bailey, who had been standing behind him with a smug look this whole time, suddenly stepped forward with a triumphant smile. “Looks like I’ve won after all,” she said sweetly, as if I wasn’t even standing there.
I turned to her slowly. “Are you deaf?” I asked. “Didn’t you hear him say he still wants me as Luna? If you think that’ s a victory, you’re more pathetic than I thought.”
Her smile faded, her lips parting in shock. “Of course I’m not going to be his Luna,” I added, tilting my head. “So you’re welcome to try on my dress, I left it at the manor. Though I doubt it’ll fit you like it fits me.”
Bailey’s eyes flared. She opened her mouth to fire back, but Mason raised his hand to silence her. He exhaled loudly and looked back at me. “Fine,” he muttered. “Under the eyes of the Moon Goddess, I accept your rejection.”
There was a jolt in my chest, a sharp pang that made me wince. But it wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be.Emery stirred gently in my mind. That’s the Moon Goddess’s mercy, she whispered. He broke the bond long ago, and she knows it. I nodded to myself, finally I was free.
Two weeks later at a Winter Ball in the Shadow blade pack I met Kieran. Kieran was everything Mason wasn’t. And within a month, I knew he was my second chance.
Four Months Later I was lying on the bed, one hand resting over my growing belly, when my phone rang. It was Ma- son. I hesitated for only a second before picking up. “What do you want?”
His voice was hoarse. “Alina, thank the goddess you picked up, I wanted to tell you, the baby wasn’t mine, the one I supposedly had with Bailey, can you imagine? That whore tricked me!”
I didn’t say anything.
“I stripped her of her rank. Exiled her and the real father from the pack.” He paused. “She’s gone Alina, the person who drove this rift between us is gone and I… I… I want you back, Alina.”
Before I could say anything grabbed the phone right out of my hand. “Don’t ever call her again,” he growled. “She has everything she needs right here.”
Then he hung up. I never got another call from Mason after that. I suppose Kieran’s voice was enough to deliver the
message.
