Alpha Kieran’s POV

Looking at Selene made me proud. She was so beautiful it hurt a little. Alina had outdone herself with the ballroom and the dress she’d picked for Selene matched the colors of the hall.

For the past two weeks, Alina and I had kept our mouths shut about the preparations. We didn’t want Selene to feel anxious over the introduction ceremony, especially since we were hoping the ball would be a great opportunity for Selene to find a second chance mate.

I knew Selene was still skeptical of all men after what Ryder put her through, but I needed her to see that not all men were terrible. And the world still had good men in it. Thankfully my daughter’s second chance mate is one of the best young men I know.

I had long since admired Logan, his parents were long time friends of mine and we often joked about how it would be nice if our children could end up as mates one day. I guess I’d live to see it happen after all.

Two weeks ago, I had been at my desk, buried in a heap of work, when Alina walked in carrying a cup of coffee. She dressed simply and wore no makeup, she looked divine. I set my pen down and gestured for her. “Come here,” I said, and when she reached me I tugged her gently onto my lap. She laughed as I gave her a quick kiss on the neck.

“Why are you in such a good mood?” she asked, smiling against my cheek.

“I’m holding you,” I said. “And I’m thanking the Moon for bringing you to me.” I kissed her temple, then her mouth. “Also, for accepting Selene without hesitation from the first moment you met her.”

Alina’s gaze warmed. “Of course,” she said. “She reminds me of myself when I was younger.” She took a sip and set the cup on the edge of the desk. “Besides, I always wanted a daughter.” Then she winked.

I remembered the winter dance where we first met. She was sitting alone at a table in the corner, hands wrapped around a glass she wasn’t drinking. People glanced at her and then away. She looked tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep.

I knew that kind of tired. Before Alina, I too had watched my fated mate in the arms of another. Betrayal was cruel, but I had learned to move on. And now as Alina’s scent filled my scenes I knew this was my chance..

I walked toward her, and remembered asking her for her name. I remember the way she looked at me. The way her eyes widened when she picked up my scent.

In that exact heartbeat, I wanted to tag her, to put my mark on her neck right there and then. But I didn’t. Instead I of- fered my hand and kept my voice low. “Might I have this dance?” I asked.

Alina’s voice pulled me back from my memories. She was still seated on my lap, facing me, her hands warm against

my chest. I kissed the slope of her neck and was about to trail down further when my phone rang on the desk.

I didn’t want to answer. I wanted to feel my mate. I nuzzled her again, and she giggled, but she tilted her head toward the sound of my ringing phone.

“Check who it is,” she said. “It might be important.”

I sighed and pulled the phone closer. The name lit the screen. Logan. I remembered the young lad, he was Alpha of Iron Viper. His parents were long time friends. I wondered why he was calling. I hit the speaker button and set the phone on the table so I could keep my arms around Alina.

“Alpha Kieran?” Logan’s voice came through, “Do you have a moment? I have something important to discuss.”

Alina heard the tone and started to rise from my lap, but I caught her hand and kept her close. “I have time,” I said.

“Go on.”

He took a breath, and the next words made both of us freeze.

“I think your daughter is my mate.”

The room seemed to narrow to the space between the phone and my heartbeat. I felt Alina’s fingers tighten on my forearm.

“I saw her at the mall this evening,” he continued when I hadn’t responded. “I caught her scent first and I followed it to the second floor near the atrium. That’s where I saw her with you and your beta. I didn’t get a good look at her face. But… I knew. My wolf knew. She is very beautiful.”

I cleared my throat and couldn’t help the small tease that slipped out. “You didn’t see her face, son. How do you

know she’s beautiful?”

He let out a short, nervous laugh. “I could feel it. The pull was strong. It was like… every sound fell away and all I could hear was her. And…” He paused. “My mother received a sign from the Moon Goddess last night. She said your daughter would be important to our pack. Vital, were her words.”

Alina met my eyes. We both remembered. Logan’s mother had the gift of prophecy. She didn’t call it often, and she never used it for petty things. When she spoke, we listened.

I couldn;t help but feel respect for Logan. He could have walked up to Selen and marked her in the middle of a mall,

but he didn’t. That tells me a lot.

Alina shifted on my lap, smoothing my shirt as if to steady herself. “Logan,” she said, “Selene has had a hard few years.”

I picked up her thought. “Yes. She’s been through things that would break most warriors. Because of that, I need you to take this slow. If you approach her at the dance, come stand with me first. I will let her know that I support your claim as a father. She will feel safer with that.”

“I understand,” he said at once. “I will follow your lead. Alpha.”

“Good.” I leaned back in the chair, “How are things at Iron Viper? Enjoying your time being Alpha?”

“Not completely Alpha Kieran. Pack duties haven’t been all rosy… .My Gamma,” he said after a long pause, “has been pushing me hard to choose his daughter, Clarisse, as my mate. I believe the two of them have made moves to sabo- tage my leadership in order to pressure me into settling down sooner.”

“But now that I know Selene is my mate… now that I have your blessing, I promise you, I’ll deal with him. I’ll deal with all of it. Give me one week, and I’ll clean up the mess.”

The situation Logan described, it felt far too familiar. We had seen this kind of manipulation before. Selene had lived through it. And we were not about to let her face compete with another over a mate.

Before I could even get a word out, Alina sat up straight. “Absolutley not,” she said firmly, “Our daughter has already been through enough. She doesn’t need to feel like she’s in a competition for her own mate.”

I wasn’t stunned by Alina’s sudden outburst. No. I was stunned, she said ‘our’ daughter. Hearing that word from her lips filled my chest with an unexpected wave of warmth.

Logan didn’t hesitate. “I swear to you, there will be no competition. Clarisse will not be a problem. My mate is Se- lene. I’m not confused about that. I can’t wait to meet her properly, and I promise, nothing will come between us.”

I knew when a man was lying, and Logan was not. He was young, but there was steel in his tone. He meant every word.

“If you can keep her safe,” I said after a long breath, “then you have my blessing. After the ball, I’ll arrange for stay here at the manor. We’ll go over details of her move after that.”

you to

We exchanged final words before I ended the call, and then… silence. Alina didn’t speak, and neither did I. We just sat there, absorbing everything. We had just gotten our daughter back, only to realize she was already being pulled away from us.

I knew better than to question the Moon Goddess’s will. But damn it, if I didn’t wish I had just one more year with her under our roof. To watch her grow, to make up for lost time. To protect her.

The only thing keeping me from despair was knowing Logan’s pack was only a forty-minute drive away. It wasn’t across the country. Still… it wouldn’t be the same.

After that day I accelerated Selene’s training program. If she would be going to another pack, at least she would know how to defend herself. To my surprise, Selene assimilated the new drills with ease. Her instincts were sharper than most warriors I’d trained in my thirty years of service. I couldn’t have been prouder.

The day of the ball came quickly and In just a few minutes, I’d be walking out to announce Selene’s reintroduction to the werewolf world.

Prior to the event I had doubled the guard at every entrance and assigned a four-wolf team to shadow Sylvia and her family the moment they crossed into our territory.

After going through the guest list, I told the steward to keep an eye out for anyone named Clarisse from Iron Viper. Once she arrives I want guards shadowing her as well.

I summoned Lyra, Dylan, and my boys into the study before the formal announcements began and told them every- thing, about Logan and his potential mateship with Selene.

I told them that I was entrusting in them a duty to protect Selene. I couldn’t put guards on her, she would feel caged which was why I was asking them. Her family, her friends.

I let out a long breath. My heart was pounding, not out of fear, but from the overwhelming responsibility of protecting what mattered most. I had lost my daughter once. I would never let that happen again.
