“They’ve been sleeping together for months,” Aurora said, “Since Ryder was sent to training before your 18th birth- day, Slyvia’s been leaving the pack every week to meet him near his training grounds. There’s a small hotel on the edge of the border that they frequent.”
I couldn’t breathe. “No,” I whispered back in my head. “You must be mistaken. He’s my mate, Aurora. He can’t… he wouldn’t… Maybe he doesn’t know I’m his mate, that’s why he’s with Sylvia, maybe if he learns the truth he’ll accept me.”
“Selene,” she paused, as if she couldn’t bear to tell me the rest. “I’ve seen them through my ability. Slyvia is using him to secure her position as Luna and Ryder wants to be the Alpha though Slyvia.”
I closed my eyes. The pain spread through my chest like wildfire.
“They plan to reject their mates so they can rule the pack together.” Aurora continued.
I wanted to scream. Instead, I clutched my chest, digging my nails into my skin. Tears blurred my vision. I wiped at them angrily, trying to breathe through the storm raging inside me.
bookshelf.
“So you always knew the truth and you brought me here. Did you know they would have, have…” I couldn’t even fin- ish my word.
After a second of silence, I heard she said yes.
“Because this wasn’t just between them.” Aurora said. ” Your parents are also involved, encouraging them. They’ve been helping Sylvia to be Luna all along.”
A quiet gasp escaped me before I could stop it. Out in the clearing ahead, Sylvia stiffened. She paused, turning her head slightly. Ryder followed her movement, his sharp eyes scanning the trees.
I slammed a hand over my mouth and pressed myself flat against the trunk. My breath was shallow, ragged, the tears now falling freely down my cheeks. I didn’t make a sound. I couldn’t. But I felt like I was dying.
“Stay hidden,” Aurora whispered. “I’m sorry. I wish I didn’t have to tell you this. But it’s time to make the decision.”
I nodded weakly. Finally, I understood why Aurora brought me here. I needed to see how wicked they were myself, otherwise how could I make up my mind to leave?
My whole body ached. My heart most of all. The betrayal made everything click. I thought back to that day, three months after my sixteenth birthday, when Sylvia caught me sneaking glances at Ryder. I guessed that was when she figured she had to take him from me. As long as I didn’t have a mate before she did, then she would definitely be-
come Luna.

My lips moved in a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess. Why must I suffer like this? Why give me a mate just to rip him away? What sin did I commit to deserve this?
Suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen like a knife. I clutched my side, nearly crying out, but I bit down on my knuckles instead.
When I dared to peek from my hiding place, I saw Ryder and Sylvia having sex, right there in the open clearing. They weren’t even trying to hide. Ryder was on top of her and their moans filled the night air. They were so loud.
I wanted to close my eyes, but I couldn’t. It was like watching a nightmare unfold in front of me, and I couldn’t wake up. I felt nauseous. My stomach twisted violently, and I had to choke back vomit. My legs were numb, but my heart pounded so loudly.
The sound of Sylvia moaning was a cruel sound to hear and. It made the pain a lot worse.
All the stories I had read growing up, all the teachings about the beauty and power of the mate bond had claimed that it was extremely powerful and not easily broken, but the anger I felt in that moment made the mate bone thin out like a thread being stretched to its limit.
When they finally quieted, the pain began to ease and I slowly took deep breaths. I watched Ryder press his lips to Sylvia’s neck like she was the most precious thing in the world.
It hurt more than I thought anything could. Jealousy burned through my chest like wildfire. I wanted to rip her throat out. I wanted to scream, to shift, to tear the two of them apart.
I had never been this jealous of Sylvia before. Even with her perfect blonde hair that was just like mother’s and her icy blue eyes she got from our father. Not once did I envy her.
So why then did she think it was right to make my life hell? She didn’t need to steal Ryder from me just to be Luna. She could have picked anyone else, but she knew I like Ryder and that’s why she went for him.
And to think that neither of them knew Ryder was my mate. He hadn’t caught my scent yet, because Aurora was masking it. But tomorrow, he would know and even then I would reject him.
Not that it mattered anymore. The thought of him knowing he had a true mate somewhere in this pack and still choos- ing to sleep with my sister made me want to vomit. He knew Sylvia wasn’t his mate. He knew. And yet he was still with her just so he could be Alpha.
I wrapped my arms around myself, my tall frame shrinking into the shadows of the trees. I hated how much I ached. What was wrong with me?
—
I had long, silky black hair that reached the small of my back it was inherited from my grandfather. A pretty face and emerald green eyes. I was even six feet tall. Sylvia always hated that fact, because she was shorter.
Despite the fact that I wasn’t horrid, anyone who showed interest in me quickly withdrew, no one wanted to offend my father by associating with me, so they all stayed away.
And Sylvia made it her mission to remind me of that every single day. Her life goal had always been to make me look bad while she went on to be Luna. And apparently, now she had found a way.

I leaned in closer when I heard her laugh. “I can’t wait for tomorrow,” Sylvia said, “Mom and Dad are finally going to announce Me and you as Alpha and Luna. Can you believe it?”
Ryder chuckled. “I can. Especially with how good you look in dress.” he kissed her again on the neck and she gig- gled.
“When you said you’d be my chosen mate and rule Frost Fang with me…” she sensually rubbed Ryder’s chest and arms. “I knew we’d win. And you know what? I made sure Dad seats Selene in the front row tomorrow. Right next to you. So I can see the look on her face when I’m announced as Luna.”
I covered my mouth to hold in the sob that escaped.
“But there’s something I had to tell you,” Ryder replied. “I caught her scent when I got back today, and I felt it, she’s my mate. But based on our agreement, I don’t mind refusing her.” He sounded like trying to suppress his emotion.
Sylvia must’ve noticed the shift in his tone “Don’t tell me you’re suddenly worried about her” she accused.
Ryder shook his head. “Of course not, I clearly got a better sister from this deal, besides I’m not interested in having a
freak as a mate.”
My soul shattered. So Ryder knew all along. He knew. He knew I was his mate. And he still chose her. I blinked through the tears that gathered in my eyes. I wasn’t going to shed tears for those two vile creatures, they deserved
each other.
At that moment, I had made up my mind. I would leave the Frost Fang pack behind and never come back.
