“I just don’t know how your parents are going to take this,” Ryder said, rubbing the back of his neck as he stared at the ground. “I mean after I found out that Selene was my fated mate… are they still going to support the two of us? Or are they going to push me to be with her instead?”

I leaned in slightly, my ears sharpening at the sound of my name. Sylvia gave a light laugh. She reached up and raked her fingers through his hair. “Don’t worry,” she said smoothly. “My father’s going to support us. And my mom… Well, she might feel a little sorry for Selene, but she’ll get over it.”

Sylvia pulled him closer. “We’ll rule the Frost Fang pack together, Ryder. It’s our destiny. Frost Fang is always my pack, not hers. And having that freak watch us every day, will be cherry on top.”

They went silent for a while and I used that moment to seethe in my anger. There was no way I’d still be in the pack when that happened.

“I just wish the rejection would kill her,” Sylvia whispered, “especially since she doesn’t even have a wolf it should make the rejection all the more potent.”

Ryder jerked back slightly, his face tightening. “Kill her? But Sylvia…”

She noticed his reaction and placed a finger on his lips “No no… I didn’t mean it like that, babe. I just… I hate seeing you stressed over her. I love you,” she murmured, resting her head on his shoulder. “I want you,

It was all an act. But Ryder ate it all up. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close again, lips brushing her forehead.

He didn’t know her like I did. He was so blinded by ambition, by the idea of becoming Alpha of the Frost Fang pack, that he couldn’t see the sort of person she truly was. Neither of them deserved love. I hoped they suffered in the end.

Still holding her, Ryder hesitated. “She’s still your sister, Sylvia. Your twin. Maybe we should slow down. This is go ing to cause a rift in your family. And the pack… they believe being ruled fated mates means a stronger pack. When word gets out that she’s my fated mate they’ll expect me to accept her.”

Sylvia shook her head “Dad’ll sooner die than let Selene become Luna, he’s hated her since she was born so rest as- sured he won’t stand for it, even if mum might get a bit sad”

Dad hated me even as a baby? But why? Why keep me around if he didn’t want me? These questions swam in my mind as I tried to understand the reason for all the hatred I had grown up with

“You need to stop worrying about all that stuff. All that talk about fated mates it’s all just bullshit anyway, my parents know that better than anyone.” Sylvia said.

Ryder blinked. “What do you mean?”

“They weren’t fated mates,” Sylvia said simply. “Mom and Dad. They both rejected their fated mates to be together. So we’re merely following in their footsteps”

I tore my gaze from Ryder and Slylvia. Watching her touch my mate made breathing difficult and I had to tighten my grip so I wouldn’t fall off the tree. It was a devastating feeling watching my fated mate in the arms of another com- pounded by the revelation that my own parents had conspired against me.

Even though they never treated me like their daughter, I never hated them. But now I did. I wouldn’t stay in this cruel pack any longer and pretended nothing had happened.

Ryder looked visibly shaken. “They lied to the entire pack?”

Sylvia shrugged. “People don’t need to know everything. Sometimes, you just tell them what they want to hear.”

I looked away. I couldn’t stand to look at them anymore.

“I need you to do it tomorrow,” Sylvia said firmly. “Reject her. Maybe after the pack meeting. But make sure it’s pri-

vate”

Ryder frowned slightly, “You’re sure that’s the best time?”

She nodded, curling her fingers around his arms. “Dad will back us. He’ll tell everyone we’re fated. They’ll believe it. We just need to handle Selene quietly.”

I was amazed by all their planning. They spoke like nothing they were doing was wrong. Like it was natural for them to betray their own blood and mate.

Then I heard them kissing again. The sound sent a fresh wave of pain crashing through me, sharp and sudden like a knife to the gut. I turned my head, but I couldn’t stop myself from glancing back. Sylvia’s hands were tangled in his hair, and Ryder was holding her tightly as their bodies melded.

My knees buckled under the weight of all the pain. The world spun around me, and I couldn’t breathe. My head felt too heavy for my shoulders. And then, everything went black.

When I woke up, I was lying on the cold ground. The scent of pine and damp earth filled my lungs as I blinked into the twilight. My vision was blurry at first, but the shape hovering above me slowly sharpened into Ryder’s face.

He was crouched beside me, gently shaking my shoulder. “Selene,” he said, “Hey, can you hear me?”

I flinched at his touch and pushed myself up on trembling elbows. My muscles ached, and my mouth tasted like dirt. I looked past him, and there she was. Sylvia. She was standing just a few feet away, fully dressed again, arms crossed and a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips.

She looked pleased. Thrilled even. Her plan had just been given a big shove forward. She needed Jsutin to reject me somewhere private, but now here I was alone with them in the woods. Ryder could reject me here and that would be the end of that.

Sylvia cocked her head at me, pretending to care. “Selene? I’m surprised you’re not at the packhouse. Are you al-

right?”

I didn’t answer her. I needed to get away from them.

Instead, I activated my mind link with Aurora. How badly hurt am I? Can we make a run for it?

I’m fine, Aurora responded calmly. I know where the nearest border is. We can make it

Hope stirred in my chest. They think I don’t have a wolf so seeing me shift would leave them stunned and give us at least a twenty-second head start.

Sylvia took a step forward, the smirk never leaving her lips. “Are you ignoring me now?” she asked, sounding mildly

amused.

I stayed silent.

Ryder glanced at me with guilt and shame written all over his face. I wanted him to feel worse than that, I didn’t want him to think I was fine and about to escape.

Then Sylvia shrugged and said lightly, “Well, just so you know, I took the liberty of contacting Mom and Dad while you were passed out. They should be here any minute, with some warriors. They agreed you need to be dealt with. I’ m sorry, but it looks like you’ll be locked up for a while.” She smiled with such confidence, she didn’t think anything could go wrong now, she thought she had won.

I could feel Aurora’s strength slowly building in my bones. I whispered to her again, I’m done. With all of this. With them. If we stay, they’ll kill us eventually.

Then we won’t stay, Aurora replied. We run as soon as the timing’s right.

That timing came sooner than I expected. The sound of pounding paws broke through the trees. My parents burst into the clearing, shifting mid-air before their feet hit the ground. My father stood tall and furious, his chest heaving. His face was red with rage when his eyes landed on me.

“You have crossed me for the last time, Selene,” he growled, “Why must you be a thorn in my side!”

My mother said nothing. She stood behind him with folded arms, but she didn’t speak a single word in my defense.

My father gave an approving nod to my sister before motioning to his warriors “Seize her and bring her back to the pack house, I want her to spend five days in the dark room with no food” The warriors didn’t hesitate, they stepped forward to carry out their Alpha’s will.

Aurora’s voice rang clear in my mind. Okay Selene, let’s get out of here..

And then she surged forward. In front of everyone, Aurora took over.

They all gasped in unison as my body shifted into my wolf. The shock on their faces was the only satisfaction I’d had all day,

None of them thought I had a wolf. None of them thought I could ever shift. But here I was.

Aurora let out a deep, commanding growl and then sprinted. We bolted past them all before they could move. I heard shouts, the scuffle of boots, and then a deafening howl from my father. The warriors behind him were already shifting and trying to cut us off.

But we were faster. We weaved through trees, heart pounding, legs flying over roots and brush. I could feel their hot breath behind us, the snapping of branches as they tried to close in.

Come on, faster, I told Aurora. Don’t slow down.

The forest blurred around us as we raced toward the border. It wasn’t far now. Just a few hundred more steps.

I didn’t look back. I was done watching my sister and my mate play house. I was done begging for scraps of love from people who saw me as nothing more than a tool or a problem to be locked away. I’d rather die than stay in the Frost Fang pack.
