I never expected Selene to be here. One second I was tangled up in Ryder, and the next, a hard thud echoed from somewhere behind the trees.
Ryder froze beneath me, his lips pausing against my neck. At the same moment we both turned our heads to see Se- lene fall from a tree branch. She hit the ground hard and laid there motionless.
I was surprised. How had she gotten so close without either of us sensing her? I had trained to detect even the faintest scent of a wolf, and Ryder was no slouch either. And yet… she’d somehow that close to us.
Ryder pulled away from me, scrambling to get dressed. The way his jaw clenched and his nostrils flared made it obvi- ous he was having it out with his wolf. Probably trying to silence the damn creature’s protests about his ‘true mate.’
I didn’t rush. I took my time to get dressed. When I walked over to where Selene had collapsed, it was clear she had been injured. Ryder was already on the ground beside her, looking all worried Or maybe guilty.

I turned away slightly and opened my mindlink with my father. Dad, I found Selene in the forest, I told him. She was spying on Ryder and me. She’s unconscious right now, though.
The rage that flooded back through the link was so strong, I could practically feel it. She left the packhouse again? he growled. Stay where you are. Your mother and I are coming with the warriors.
He didn’t ask what I was doing in the forest with Ryder, and I smiled at that. He never cared about the details when it came to Selene. He always chose my side.
I cut the link and exhaled slowly, letting the satisfaction bloom in my chest. This could really be it. If everything went how I hoped, Ryder would reject Selene the moment she woke up. And if the Moon Goddess was still on my side, the pain would be enough to kill her. She didn’t have her wolf. She wouldn’t survive it.
I’ve hated Selene ever since we were little, because I knew even then that as long as she lived my dream of becoming Luna would always be under threat. It made me want to kill her with my bare hands. Once, I almost had. The first time I tried to kill her was sloppy and Mom found out. She warned me never to try it again. But Dad didn’t even scold
I didn’t know why my dad hated selene so much and I didn’t care, I just wanted her gone, my life would be so much better without her in it.
I crouched down beside Ryder, keeping my tone soft but sweetly false. “Is she breathing?”
He didn’t look at me. “Barely ”
“Poor thing,” I said, brushing Selene’s tangled hair back like I gave a damn. “Must’ve been a shock, seeing the two of

us together must have been too much for her.”
He didn’t reply. His eyes stayed locked on Selene, and his silence irritated me more than I wanted to admit.
I remembered the day I showed Selene what I really thought of her. I was walking home from school in ninth grade. Kristen was beside me while Selene walked in front of us.
Following my lead Kristen and I pushed Selene hard from behind sending her falling into the ground. We both dusted off our hands as if we had touched trash “She’s so disgusting,” Kristen said. “I don’t know how you live with her. Honestly, your parents should’ve thrown her out at birth.”
Selene picked herself up and turned around to face who had pushed her. She knew I was behind her, and didn’t imme- diately suspect I was the one who pushed her, but then she saw the wicked smile on my face and she knew then what i really thought of her
I didn’t hesitate. I sneered. “She’s right,” I told Selene coldly. “I wish you’d never been born. I hate you. Mom and Dad hate you. They always have. You need to accept that. You’ll never be Luna of Frost Fang. Never.”
I still remember the way Selene’s body trembled when I told her, she must have known then that I really wanted her dead. And that dad would help me, beacuse he’d rather see her become Luna of Frost Fang
By Werewolf law, Selene was supposed to be the next Luna. She was the older twin. The rightful heir. But Dad changed the rules and declared that whoever found their mate first would become Luna instead. He pitched it as fair. He was buying me time. And I was going to use every second of it.
That day at the mountain… I didn’t hesitate. She was walking just a little ahead, distracted by the sound of rushing water. She turned back to say something and then I pushed her off the mountain. Hard.
I thought it would be enough. I watched her hit the rocks on the way down. For a moment, I believed she was dead. I felt no regret. Only relief.
But she didn’t die. She woke up hours later in the infirmary, her arm and leg shattered, her head bandaged. I was al- ready in her room, playing the concerned sister in front of Dad. I told him, “I don’t understand why she jumped.”
Selene tried to speak. I tried to tell him the truth. But Dad didn’t even blink.
“I believe Sylvia,” he growled at her. “And you, for your sake I better not catch you spreading the lies against Sylvia.”
Then he put his arm around me and walked out, leaving her in that hospital bed like she meant nothing.
I looked back just before the door closed and gave her the smallest smile. Then I warned the other kids who were there at the mountain. Told them if they spoke, they’d regret it. None of them said a word.
I used her accident to spread a new rumor. I told everyone that Selene didn’t have a wolf and that was why her in- juries were taking so long to heal.
Everyone believed me. The whole pack started treating her like she was cursed. She became a joke. A shame. Some- thing to avoid.
After graduation, when we were eighteen, it got worse. She wasn’t allowed to leave the packhouse anymore. She had

no rights. No voice. And I… I had everything.
I should’ve been satisfied. But Selene had one thing I couldn’t control and that was Ryder.

He was the Beta’s son. But Dad knew Ryder wanted to become Alpha and he also knew that Selene loved him. If they became mates, Selene might become Luna. So to avoid such a catastrophe from occurring he devised a scheme. He called me into his office before graduation and told me he wanted me to seduce Ryder.
I was happy to do it. Not because I loved Ryder. But because Selene did. And because Dad was right, we couldn’t risk her becoming Luna, not even by accident.
Suddenly Selene stirred. She was waking up already, only minutes after falling. Damn it. I expected her to be out cold for hours. She sat up slowly, pain all over her face, and then she looked at me. I pretended to be concerned. Asked if she was okay.
She ignored me and I noticed the way Ryder was looking at her. It was clear his wolf wanted her from the turmoil in his eyes. I immediately mind-linked Dad, “Come now. To the north stream. Ryder’s looking like he’s going to accept
her as his fated mate. We don’t have time.”
Dad responded instantly. “Fated mate?! I’m almost there. Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.” I knew by ‘handle it’ he meant he’d force Ryder to reject Selene in a cell. I said a silent prayer urging dad to get her quick. It seemed that Ryder was about to lose control and if that happened he might mark Selene right there.
Soon I heard the howls echoing through the trees and moments later they joined us at the clearing. I turned to greet them as they arrived. Dad nodded at me with pride, then signaled his warriors to seize Selene.
But then she stood up. And right before their hands could reach her, she shifted. Right in front of everyone. I was shocked and took a few frightened steps back. This couldn’t be possible, she didn’t have a wolf. And yet there she was, in her massive black wolf form. I looked up at her with both horror and fear etched into my face.
