After Beta Miles stepped between me and my family, I felt the safest I had felt in years.

It was strange. I should’ve been afraid of him since he was the Beta of Shadow Blade. But I wasn’t. There was some- thing about him that made me want to trust him.

Still, when more Shadow Blade warriors emerged from the bushes, my heart began to pound again.

I hadn’t even sensed them at all. They appeared like shadows sliding from the trees, they passed me without so much as a glance, forming a protective arc around Beta Miles.

These were the warriors feared across the region, for being ruthless. I looked to the treeline, wondering if there were more of them hiding.

Luckily the warriors didn’t seem interested in me; their attention was on my family who were still on the other side of the border. Listening to Beta miles mock and threaten my father brought a smile to my face. I almost laughed.

The way beta Miles spoke to him made me know that If my father or any of the Frost Fang warriors dared to cross that fence… they weren’t going to make it back.

I kept my head low and waited. When I was sure no one was paying attention to me, I began to slowly step backward, one foot after the other, inching toward the trees. I told myself I’d disappear before anyone noticed. My limbs trem- bled with the urge to shift, to run.

Stop, Selene, Aurora spoke suddenly. They won’t hurt us. If they wanted us dead, we’d be dead already.

You don’t know that, I responded. They could just be saving us for later. You heard the stories about what they do to trespassers.

That’s unlikely Aurora said, after a moment she added Don’t you find it odd that shadow blade is surrounded by 10- foot stone walls, but only has a 6-foot wooden fence on the section of their border with Frost Fang?

That’s none of my business, I muttered. I just want out. Out of here. Out of the packs. I want to live among humans where I won’t be bullied anymore for simply existing. I just… I just want to go away.

She went quiet after that. I slipped past the last tree and into the denser forest. My werewolf vision allowed me to see in near pitch black condition.

I wasn’t going to be dragged back into another pack’s politics. I wasn’t going to be pitied or manipulated. I had to be- lieve there was a life for me outside of all this madness.

After a while, I stumbled across a stream. The water glistened under the moonlight, the stream was wide enough that

I’d have to wade through it or find another way across. I hesitated, scanning for a way across.

Then a deep voice rumbled from behind me.

“There’s a bridge to the left. About thirty paces.”

I let out a startled gasp and jumped instinctively into the cold stream. Water splashed over me, soaking my clothes and sending a chill to my bones. I scrambled to my feet, breathing heavily, and stared up at the riverbank.

That’s when I saw who had spoken. It was Beta Miles.

He stood by the bank flanked by three Shadow Blade warriors.

The warriors looked extremely well trained, so there was no point trying to run, they could easily kill me without breaking a sweat.

Beta Miles was easily over six feet tall, maybe 6’4″. Broad shoulders, strong arms, a solid presence. His hair was a messy, dirty blond that caught the faint moonlight above, but I couldn’t make out the color of his eyes through the darkness. Even so, I could tell he was handsome and possibly in his late thirties or early forties. He radiated a sort of calm and quiet strength.

It was hard to explain, but Aurora seemed to trust him, and I didn’t know why.

My voice cracked as I lifted my eyes to meet his. “Please,” I whispered through the tears burning down my face. “Don’t hurt me… I didn’t mean to trespass. I just… I had to run away. I had to get away from them. Please, I don’t want to die here… but I can’t go back there either, they’ll kill me…’

“I

I closed my eyes and whispered a prayer to the Moon Goddess. If this was where I would die, then let it be quick.

Suddenly I heard three loud howls and my whole body tensed up, I was waiting for them to lunge at me and rip me apart, but nothing happened. When I slowly opened my eyes again, Beta Miles was still standing in front of me, with a sombre look on his face.

“It’s okay Selene, you’re not in any danger, they wouldn’t dare lay a finger on you.” he said gently. “They’re just an- noyed you thought you were going to be killed.”

I blinked, confused. He took a step closer, his voice calm. “You’ve been through enough, haven’t you?” he said. “No one here is going to hurt you, Selene. Come with us to the packhouse.”

I nodded slowly, What else could I do? Though I didn’t trust them, not really. How could I trust anyone from a pack even more powerful than frost fang. Plus their beta was being kind to me. So I kept my guard up and kept searching for an escape route.

He walked ahead, leading the way while the other warriors walked beside and behind me, forming a loose circle of protection around me.

I wondered where the other warriors I had seen at the border were. I glanced back at the woods. They probably stayed behind to make sure my father’s men didn’t try to send men across the border to grab me.

Then it hit me. And I realized in one shameful moment that the warriors, including Beta Miles, had seen me confront

my family earlier.

A flush of shame spread through my chest and to my cheeks.

Word traveled fast in my pack, and I figured that in less than two days everyone in Shadow Blade would know what happened tonight.

I’d probably be tagged as persona non grata because I’ve never had any training. Werewolves valued two things over all and that was Strength and beauty.

I had barely been here for an hour and I had already got off on the wrong foot. I let out a small, shaky sob. Beta Miles stopped immediately and turned back to face me. “Are you hurt?” he asked, his brows drawing together in concern. “Do you need the pack hospital? We can make a stop there before going to the pack house.”

Hearing his soft gentle voice only made it worse. Why would a stranger care more about me than my own family?

The tears spilled faster. I tried to turn away, to hide my face, but my body betrayed me. My legs gave out. I stumbled, and before I could hit the ground, strong arms caught me.

Beta Miles pulled me into his chest without hesitation.

“It’s okay,” he said reassuringly. “Don’t be afraid. I swear on my life, Selene… everything’s going to be okay.”

I nodded against his shoulder, my cheek brushing against the soft fabric of his shirt. I didn’t expect to feel so safe in someone else’s arms.

In a way he made everything I had experienced in my own pack ten times worse. Because a stranger could treat me better than my own family ever could.

Beta Miles wrapped an arm around me gently, he didn’t move or say anything, he just held me and that was all I needed.

After a short while, the thick forest began to thin, and the rough forest path soon became a neat man made stone path. A massive packhouse soon came into view. And It was massive, it was at least six stories high and twice the size of the pack house of Frozen fang. I stared up in awe.

At the top of a grand set of stairs, four figures stood waiting. One of them, a woman with rich brown hair and piercing blue eyes, stepped forward first. Her strong build gave away the fact that she trained often. She looked like someone you wouldn’t want to cross in a fight, but there was warmth in her expression.

Miles greeted her with a gentle smile. “Vanessa,” he said calmly, “we’ve got a guest staying with us tonight. I need you to make sure she’s fed and put in fresh clothes”

Her eyes immediately flicked to me. Surprise showed on her face, but not judgment. She looked back at Miles, and for a moment they stood silent. I realized they were speaking through their mind link.

This woman was clearly his mate. I lowered my gaze, nervous about what they might be saying. Standing just behind Vanessa was a man who looked to be in his thirties. He had kind eyes and seemed welcoming.

Then my eyes landed on the tallest among them, a young man, maybe nineteen or twenty. He stood half an inch short-

er than Beta Miles, but there was something in the way he held himself. The moment our eyes met, I felt a chill rush down my spine. He didn’t like me. I looked away immediately afraid that he might have me thrown in the dungeons.

I turned to beta Miles and in the brightly lit packhouse environs I could see that his eyes were a deep smokey gray.

Beta Miles gave me a reassuring smile and turned back to the young man, they both communicated via mind link and i figured that was his son.

The last figure on the stairs was a girl with a bright smile that lit up her whole face. She had the same brown hair and blue eyes as her mother Vanessa. She looked genuinely happy to see me.

She waved a little and stepped forward. “Lyra,” Vanessa called softly, “take our guest upstairs. Let her use your shower and lend her something to wear. I’ll fix something for her to eat.” Lyra nodded eagerly and walked down the

steps to meet me.

I’ve never seen such a healthy family before, they all seemed happy to see me, except Beta mile’s son, and the other older man who watched me with hard eyes. I made a mental note to stay alert while I was here.

All my life I had been bullied and treated like shit. Naturally I dreamed of living in a place where I wouldn’t be judged or shunned, and as I walked up the steps of the Shadow blades pack house I felt closer to that dream now than I ever had before.
